What Is Neuroblastoma?

First things first, Neuroblastoma is a fatal disease or ailment that accounts for up to 8% to 10% of all tumours that are ubiquitous in the kids, specifically aged 5 or younger than this.  Neuroblastoma is one such complicated disease that has a huge impact on the kids on the physical level, emotional level, social level and psychological level. It is imperative to know the sympathetic nervous system, which is where Neuroblastoma tumour starts to develop.

What Is Neuroblastoma?

The sympathetic nervous system

The sympathetic nervous system is the nerves, the brain, and the spinal cord, which spread from there to all over the body parts. It is for sensation, thinking and movement that the nervous system is required. In addition to this, the nervous system also controls other bodily functions such as blood pressure, digestion, heart rate, breathing, etc. This is known as the autonomic nervous system. Below are the factors that the sympathetic nervous system includes:

  • Nerve fibres that are present on all the sides of the spinal cord.

  • Constellations of nerve cells named ganglia at a few of the points.

  • Cells that look like nerves found in the adrenal glands (these are the glands that are found sitting at the top of the kidneys) at the centre.

Why Is It Important To Receive Antibiotics On Time?

When a child is suffering neuroblastoma, it is very crucial to give antibiotics on time for the survival of the child from the infections. The administration of antibiotics and it’s timings in such a severe case is extremely vital for the effectiveness of the antibiotic psychoanalysis. In case, adjournment happens in the supervision of antibiotics, then it can lead to treacherous consequences. It is also to be noted here that if there is a 1-hour delay in giving antibiotics to the patients in such cases, it can result in over 8 hours of increase in the number of days of patient’s treatment.

What Are The Treatments Available For Children With Neuroblastoma?

Below are the types of treatments given:

  • Surgery

In the treatment like that of surgery, the doctors remove the tumour along with the encircled tissue when the operation is done. An oncologist is a surgical specialist, who treats cancer through surgery. Having said that; in most of the cases, the neuroblastoma is not found until it has spread into the rest of the body parts. So, when the surgery takes place, the doctor tries to take out as much of the tumour as possible.

  • Chemotherapy

If the doctor finds chemotherapy as the best treatment for the patient, then they use drugs to rescind the cancer cells. This procedure helps in ending the ability of the cancer cells to propagate and spread all over the other parts of the body. Chemo is done by a medical oncologist or paediatric oncologist.

The following drugs are given to the children who are diagnosed with intermediate-risk neuroblastoma:

  • Carboplatin

  • Cyclophosphamide (Neosar)

  • Etoposide

  • Doxorubicin

The following drugs are given to the children who are diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma:

  • Cytokines (GM-CSF and IL2)

  • Carboplatin (Paraplatin)

  • Cisplatin (Platinol)

  • Busulfan (Busulfex, Myleran)

  • Isotretinoin

  • Radiation therapy

Another treatment that is given to cancer patients with neuroblastoma is radiation therapy. In this therapy, the use of x-ray with high-energy is done to rescind the cancer cells. The radiation therapy is usually done by a radiation oncologist. The most often used procedure for this treatment is named as external-beam radiation therapy.

  • Retinoid therapy

In Retinoid therapy, which is similar to Vitamin A, the mature cells are turned into normal cells.

  • Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy as the name itself suggests is the treatment used to enhance the defence mechanism of the patients to fight cancer.
