Perceptions and Determinants Behind Sexual Abuse

It is very important to study the sexual violence against women as this is a matter of cross cultural intersections and is very important topic for various policies practice theory around the world (Basile, 2016). The paper proposes different research questions related to the topic of sexual abuse and violence along with the potential results of those research questions in the form of hypothesis in order to elaborate the limited research around different cultures and mine sets of perpetrators behind the crime of sexual abuse. It must be noted that there are various research gaps between the study and impact of sexual abuse in various forms on the psychological well-being of the women in different areas (Cain, 2017). It is very important to study and analyze various perceptions of the perpetrators behind committing the sexual offences against women so that they can be treated accordingly with a better strategy to counter all forms of sexual violence in the society.

Research questions

  • To identify the mentality of the people behind performing sexual violence.

  • To identify whether these perceptions and ideologies for committing the crime of sexual violence is influenced by age, gender or education of the person and what are the forms of abuse.

  • To analyze the causes and people committing the sexual violence between the inmate partners, at workplace and with young girls/children.

Hypothesis

Based on various determinants of different literatures, the tentative hypothesis infers the following potential results:-

  • The sexual violence between the inmates partners are not limited to you only physical abuse but also the emotional abuse of the female partner. The major reason that could be understood is that the mentality of dominating the female partner due to the male chauvinism by the husband. The sense of control over the partner is the major reason of sexual violence between the inmate partners.

  • The cause for sexual violence at school or workplace occurs usually because of the frustration of a person who commits such act. The abuse can be in the form of verbal, written all physical abuse which can destroy the self-confidence of a person.

  • Children usually below the age of 15 years are usually suffered from sexual violence which creates a negative impact upon their psychology and behavioral patterns and often leads to depression and societal tendency. The perpetrators can be anyone from the neighborhood, family all friends of these children.

Unit of analysis/ methodology

The unit of analysis is the women who had suffered the trauma of sexual abuse in different areas irrespective of their age. The independent variables are incorporated in the unit of analysis where the factors of stereotypes, society, and culture will be analyzed to assess the ideologies and attitudes of the people committing the sexual violence and abuse towards women (Hamed, 2016). The research methodology adopted by the research is qualitative in nature, with the help of this methodology the researcher will identify and analyze the data which is already published by different scholars and researchers upon the same topic. The researcher in a study has used the secondary resources as well as the quantitative methodology in the form of conducting a survey to understand the violence against women (Joseph, 2018).

However the unit of analysis has its own limitation as the researcher cannot go out in different cultures outside the territory of Australia for conducting the primary research but for the same the secondary resources are relied upon. The targeted population is limited as the unit of analysis is justified only from the point of view of the females but lack the male perspective as they often tend to restrain themselves from speaking about the sensitive topic as sexual abuse. The research shows that around 40% of male restrain themselves from indulging into the conversation of sexual violence. 30% of the mail does not believe in equality with the women as they still think themselves as superior to them and does not support the safeguard of sexual violence especially in marriages (Taherdoost, 2016). It can be seen that male believe that women must surrender themselves physically to man when they are married because they are deemed as a property of man.

Sampling strategy

The survey is inclusive of various variables like the characteristics of perpetrators identified by the women, impact of sexual violence upon the physical and mental health of the women, aunty attitude of the male perpetrators who commits sexual and psychological violence (Hamed, 2016). The questions will accommodate upon the psychological, economic as well as physical abuse. The sample designed will represent the various groups of women so that it can help the calculation for a specific prevalence in various societies (Levenson, 2015). Snowball sampling method is used by the researcher in order to study the limited size of the population.

The questions were asked two different women at several workplace and households on a random basis to identify the answers of the questions imposed in the research objective. The questionnaire is composed of 11 questions and has been categorized under different categories covering the sexual assault against women. Different types of victimization are also been incorporated in the questions to get a more genuine and clear picture of the trauma suffered by the women suffering from sexual violence. The researcher had also used a non-probability sample strategy but it land in attracting the participants from diverse community which had deteriorated the results of the survey conducted by the researcher (Joseph, 2018).

Conclusion

The major cause of sexual violence fosters the belief of perceived Male superiority along with inferiority of women in the society which tends to dominate the woman in the form of sexual violence against them. According to the definition given by the World Health Organization any force or coercion which is associated with the sexual intercourse will be termed as most and will come under the category of sexual violence. The sense of unequal power equations between both the men and women has strongly influence the mental mindsets of the male individual and creates a social centric and ego centric attitude in him.
