Based on the reflective cycle model by Gibbs, I need to describe the event priory for better understanding of the factor. While describing the event, I need to say that an ethical dilemma has been practiced by me to one of the patients, who has serious health condition. In this regard, I would say that the action has been done by me, as the real scenario will make the patient and their family, which I thought not worthy for the treatment process.
The model of reflection denotes the individual feelings for the participants (Sekarwinahyu et al. 2018). I confess my feelings regarding the ethical dilemma as well in this discussion. Being a care giver by profession, I thought that informing the patient about the current health state is disheartening for that individual. However, I have also recognised that by hiding the reality from that patient is going to be unethical with respect to the healthcare norms. Additionally, I have been feeling guilty after that event and cannot concentrate on my assigned actions.
As commented by Li et al. (2020), the reflective model helps to evaluate individual perspectives about specific events a well for future betterment. after discussing the event with my viewpoint, I can evaluate both negative and positive perspectives about the matter. In positive perspective, I can relate that by hiding the current physical status and future consequences to the patient, I have motivated that individual to participate in the treatment, which may improves the situation. However, on the contrary, I have breached the ethical practice in healthcare and this reduces the reliability of patients from their medication.
I have learnt significant insight from this event and this can improve my medical professionalism in the future as well. With this learning, I can manage these types of situations more ethically in the future by managing the professional norms of healthcare. Contextually, I need to develop skills of emotion management for my profession. The patients and their family members have rights to know about the health condition of the affected person, which I needed to deliver them in a professional manner for their transparency and offering them platform to make further decision about the patient.
Based on the discussion, I can understand that my skills of professionalism needed to be developed in me, by which I can inform the condition of the patient at least to their family members. I would like to develop my interaction with the patients or with their family members, however; after managing the professional norms and always prioritise my professional ethics ahead of emotional attachments.
