Introduction

Racism in Australia has become one of the prominent parts that has been coming up largely in modern society. But the attitude of racism could be traced in the parts of historical and contemporary racism against the different communities. The aboriginal Australian communities had lived in the region for almost 65 thousand years prior to the arrival of British. Once the eastern part of Australia was claimed by the British, the native found it difficult to fight for their rights. The passage of time ethnicity from both the communities started coming up. In the modern times, with immigration of a lot of foreign settlers, Australia has now become home to people belonging to various ethnic backgrounds like Arabs, Indians, Africans, etc. (Augoustinos, Tuffin & Rapley. 1999) For a long time now, Australian citizens are battling with the problem of racial discrimination amongst people in the region.

Social Determinant: How Racism Is a Barrier for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

The indigenous people of Australia have faced racism for a long time, and it has been a determinant their health and the social economic conditions between the non-indigenous and the indigenous Australian population. According to a study, a health survey of the adults talks about Victoria era that includes both indigenous and non-indigenous adults. The results showed that the indigenous Victorian adults are more likely to have experienced racism past twelve months of the study, than their non-indigenous contemporaries.

The study that has been cited referred to people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Descent of people to be as indigenous, as not all people belonging to the Victoria era are regarded as original or Koori (Markwick et al. 2019). Current indigenous Australian continue in facing the institutional and interpersonal racism which has led to their lower socioeconomic status as they are excluded from the economic opportunities as well as land ownership. Furthermore, life expectancy of men and women of indigenous population is around 10 and 9 years less, respectively, than non-indigenous men and women. A lot of evidence consistently points out that it is racism which is a key determinant of the health of indigenous aboriginal and Torres strait islander population.

Role Played by Adam Goodes in Addressing Racism

Adam Goodes has been an elite and professional football player who used to play for Sydney swans in the Australian football league. He belongs to the Aboriginal Australian descent and is an active member of the Sydney indigenous community. He has also spent time working with the troubled youth belonging to indigenous groups of Australia. He has undertaken activities like opening a football academy and youth detention centers for the betterment of youth belonging to indigenous population and trying to empower them as a role model for the next generation across Australia.

Overtime Goodes has come up with interviews show the racial discrimination he faced in playing the game. Despite being a decorated player in the Sidney Swans Hall of Fame he was booed into retirement. Despite facing fall from his status, he continues to maintain his silent and philosophical part and is looking into a future where he can help the indigenous people of Australia to achieve more than he could do in the field of football. He continues to tell how is love of football died to the racial discrimination he faced. He wants the coming generation to be prepared, strong, and achieve better. His work for various youth centers is a testimony of his efforts (Lane 2019).

Three Ways I Could Provide Culturally Safe Care as A Registered Nurse/midwife.

Childbirth is an incredibly challenging aspect faced by the women of aboriginal descent. The discrimination is done against it and not provided with equally state-of-the-art facilities as against their non-indigenous counterparts (Middleton et al. 2015). As a nurse or midwife, the advice I could try to reach them out personally, if a lot of them do not speak English, I would have to treat them with extra care showing them concern. Childcare would also be provided on my part so that the mortality rate of the in infants Commune can be controlled. I would also try to reach out to NGOs who could help me and provide free and necessary medicines to the expecting mothers in such communities, and the land for after birth phase.

Conclusion

The Australian land has been facing the problem of discrimination for long. The Aboriginal Australian communities are the major victim of such discrimination. The racial discrimination has been so much so that such communities are facing dire consequences in terms of social economic status and help as well. Life expectancy is less than that of the non-indigenous counterpart, where infant mortality rate is also high. As a part of modern society, one has to you tried to work to reduce such activities and provide people equal opportunities irrespective of their races.
