Abstract on Urban Heat Island Effect

A great challenge is urban heat Islands (UHI) and the heat can increase because of the predicted temperature increases, this is very associated with global warming. This is the reason why the temperature of the city rises by few degrees as compared to the closed areas as the surface such as the concrete floor, roads, and footpaths absorbs more energy from the sun and gets hotter for a long period. To reduce the effects of insulating heat, the district of inner-city, in the city of Sydney fixed some steps. All the steps are described in this report in detail. This report described the development of Victoria Park. It also described the analysis of parking detail, the strategies of data management, facilities related to the subsurface, park’s mapping in detail, evaluation of design and methods proposals for the designing of the park in future.

Introduction to Urban Heat Island Effect

Victoria Park is located in the corner of the road of the city that is Parramatta Road, Camperdown and it is a 22-acre urban park in the Sydney city NSW. There are lots of things situated at the Victoria Park such as playground of the children, amazing flower beds, lawns of grass, park pool and a large number of trees that provide an amazing, peaceful and cool oasis amidst. This park contains various historic frameworks like Lodge if Gardner, totem pole that is Canadian, a wooden bridge is also there, and the gate, the entrance gate is very beautiful that gives the glimpse of 19th century and gives an amazing feel of earlier Sydney. Apart from these beautiful places, swimming pool and playground for children is also situated, children of all age can play in this park. Various community events held at this park-like Yabun festival which held on 26 January every year. It is a festival of Aboriginal cultures and Torres Strait Islanders. This festival is a fundraiser festival that collects the funds for lesbian and gay Mardi Gras. The transportation facility is also good around this park as the service of a city bus is good and car parking is also there in the park. This study presents the detailed analysis of park’s uses, strategies of data management, facilities of subsurface, and evaluation of design and methods proposals for the designing of the park in future.

History of Victoria Park

This park has changed gradually and it has been developed over some time. Earlier, it was used to be a forest and it comes under the protected area. After some time, this park was known to as ‘Grose Farm’. It was named after a Governor Lieutenant; he gets this area in the grant land and the name of the Governor is Francis Grose. The walking road beside the park was constructed which named as city road later and Parramatta road. This area was given to the University of Sydney in the year 1853. After this, the Parramatta road and city raid was given to the University for the Entrance. Charles Moore is the director and he planned the park in a very beautiful style. From the year 1884, James also joined in monitoring the planning the development work of NSW. This included various public park’s architecture and all the specifications of governments architect garden. In this time, a grand entry point was constructed and the tower of Sydney was also aligned to the main building of University.

In the late 19th century, the university used this park for another purpose. In the year 1911, the city council of the city decided to the redevelopment of this park and planned to build a garden. In the late 1930s, different types of modelling done to the garden that contained such as lawns, pathways, lake, etc. swimming pool was also build in the year 1955 that became one of the popular swimming pools in the middle of the city. After some time, the council of south Sydney also redeveloped the Foot Bridge and pedestrian at the end of 1990s. In the year 2018, this park was listed in the list of NSW heritage.

Urban Heat Island

Because of the activities of human, the temperature of the urban region becoming hotter day by day as compared to the close by areas. The difference in temperature is high at night because in the night the wind is weak. The primary cause of this temperature difference is various kinds of surfaces such as concrete surface, concrete pavement and the roads in the urban areas that consume more heat and energy from the sun and it absorbed the heat for a longer period and this heat transferred to the soil in a long period. The reason is, the area of Sydney contained more than 50 per cent of concrete surfaces that makes the city hotter as compared to the nearby places. To diminish this temperature difference, the Victoria Park plays an important role to reduce UHI. Moreover, the areas like Victoria Park can be used to enhance the mitigation process of heat in Sydney CBD.

It is convenient to have a look at the geographical location of Victoria Park to evaluate the present structures that are remarkably important to suggest in improving Victoria Park to eliminate the UHI. The recommendation for maximizing tree plantation will help in photosynthesis and give more oxygen as well as enhance the shaded area and gives a cool temperature in the park. This will also enhance the quality of air in nearby places and reduce the pollution that happens because of the city traffic. Moreover, the garden also suggests replacing this heat absorbed concrete surface with other material like sine gravels. This all suggestions can become clearer and more concise through the GIS presentation. GIS map presentation will help in making the detailed client’s requirement in a very convenient way. The study defined the benefits of Victoria Park and future suggestions for enhancing the conditions of UHI via GIS software. All the suggestions and recommendations finalised in the year 2014. There are some other recommendations are also provided to consider. The use of the park and the facilities are provided by the park define in detail with all the images.
