The young people perceive it to be convenient to get to know about what is happening around the world with the medium of social media. The majority proportion of the young population has an access to smart phones wherein they have signed in into different social media accounts that provide them news on immediate basis. One such example can be Twitter that is been popularly used by young population to gather news related to all the matters whether political or civic.
The essay question aims to find out that whether social media facilitates the spread of fake news. The question will be answered considered and evaluating the quality of the content demonstrated on such platforms.
The news that is demonstrated and communicated through the social media platforms has been designed in the form of entertainment for its viewers. In order to make the news entertaining to the viewers, social media platforms have to deliver fragmented news wherein both the sides of the stories are not shown to the viewers.
Depiction of incomplete information on social platforms leads to the spread of fake news among the young population that highly considers social media platforms as a source of news. In this section other supporting statements in line with the topic sentence will be provided.

The rules that are followed by the social media platforms for communicating pieces of information to the population are very different than the rules that are adhered by the rest of the technologies. The content shown on the social media platforms does not undergo any editorial analysis before being transferred to the population. With the increased use of apps and social media platforms among the young people, it has become very convenient for them to get to know about world affairs through easy glance at their mobile phones. It becomes important to evaluate the quality of the content that is being transferred from these platforms to the young people who are highly dependent on social media for accessing the news.
According to the study conducted by Ralston et al. (2018), the main role of the social media platforms is entertainment and engaging their viewers. While presenting any topic, they will try and make it as entertaining as people in order to increase their views. In this process, they tend to demonstrate fragmented and one sided stories to their viewers. The viewer tends to collect pieces of fragmented news from different sources for understanding the whole matter (Ralston et al., 2018). It also becomes difficult for them to differentiate between false and true information. Social media platforms tend to focus on that part of the story which can seem to be interesting to the viewers and do not focus on showing across the reality of the matter. Therefore, it can be said that incomplete knowledge regarding the matter or news is transferred through social media.
The study conducted by Sveningsson (2015), demonstrates a different idea on this whole argument. The study states that young population comprises of informed individuals who understand the fact that the knowledge on the issue imparted over social media is opinioned. They rely on social platforms because they are able to listen and refer to opinions of many on the ongoing matter in the world. This is what interests them and therefore they rely on social media as a medium for news (Vraga & Tully, 2019). The traditional news platforms do not give the young population a chance to hear the opinions about others on the topic which certainly is perceived as boring by the young population (Ku et al., 2019).
According to the brief discussion held above it can be understood that the young people rely on social media platforms for getting information regarding ongoing matters because they are able to listen and refer to opinioned views on the matter. However, this method can eventually lead to the communication of information which is fragmented and incomplete. Also, it is highly subjective to believe that every young individual will be rational enough to understand that the news demonstrated over social media is opinioned and is not the actual truth. Thus, this may lead to transfer of fake news among the young population as half information is equivalent to wrong information.
