NU3030: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Assignment

Social and Emotional well-being

Social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) can be referred to as a strengths-based approach related to healthcare that is suitable according to the framework of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture (Farnbach et al., 2017). The term SEWB is used by numerous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to describe just not only the physical health and well-being but all the characteristics related to the cultural, emotional, spiritual, and social wellbeing of a person (AIH, n.d.).It has been observed as an essential and integral part of the happiness and human health of the people of the community. It deeply recognizes culture, family, connection to land, spirituality, and community being important to people and significantly impacts their well-being. People belonging from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture firmly believes that the issues related to mental health and mental illness focuses extensively on mental health problems and not on all the factors that influence well-being and rather prefer to use the term SEWB as it appropriately looks upon health as the holistic care center (OBryan, 2016).

Mental health

Mental health is a very well-focused term that is mainly used, especially by people from non-indigenous culture. It describes the process of how people feel and think, and also how they cope with and take part in the situations and contemporaries of daily life (AIH, n.d.). However, recognition of term mental health seems distorted when dealing with the people from Indigenous culture. The term mental health involves the basics of emotional, psychological, and social well-being (Mental Health, 2017). Mental health can be defined as the state of human beings which is much more than the lack of mental disorders. Good mental health can be regarded as the enablement to fully enjoy and appreciate other people, environment, and day-to-day life (Healthy WA, n.d.). A positive surrounding and good mental health can be looked upon as a sense of confidence, well-being, and self-esteem. Mental health among individuals helps them in forming good and positive relationships, using the abilities to reach our potential, and also to deal with the challenges of life.

Aboriginal Medical Services

The Aboriginal Medical Service mainly known as AMS was established in Redfern from the year 1971 (Marlow, 2016). In Australia, it has been regarded as the first Aboriginal community-controlled health service. However, the evolution progresses till the time to respond as the integrated indigenous community organization, out of which most of the Aboriginal medical services have been outgrown around the state of New South Wales. Aboriginal Medical Services can be regarded as the health service funded principally to discuss the negative effects of discrimination on the health of people from Indigenous culture by providing services that are health empowering, culturally appropriate, and offers comprehensive care (Baba, Brolan amp Hill, 2014). It has been found that from a small volunteer services firm it has been expanded to remote, regional, and urban Australia with almost 150 centers (Marlow, 2016).

Primary Health Care

Aboriginal Medical Services established on the thought of Aboriginal community-controlled health care and also as a part of its broader objective of delivering primary health care across the Aboriginal community in Australia. It has a history of developing health promotion programs that are also acknowledged by the World Health Organization, which also outlines the main principles of Primary Health care (Campbell et al., 2018). Primary Health care can be defined as the first level of contact of persons, families, and the communities with the healthcare system through opting for AMS. The main objective of AMS aligning with the principals of Primary health care has been seen enhancing the health standards across all the Australian communities by promoting health, empowering people, curating illness, preventing and managing chronic diseases, rehabilitative, supportive and palliative care approaches for all the Aboriginal community (Freeman et al., 2016). Primary Health care is solely based on the important aspect of Aboriginal life and can be seen as a united effort of the local Aboriginal community intended in maintaining and attaining cultural and emotional well-being. The AMS services have been found providing evidence-based care to approximately 55,000 patients in a year for the community across Australia in all the multidisciplinary domains of dental, drug and alcohol, medical, and all the aged care services (Aboriginal Medical Service, 2016).

Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services

An Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services mainly acknowledged as ACCHS can be defined as the primary health care service that is operated and initiated by the local Aboriginal community mainly intends to provide holistic, culturally suitable, and comprehensive health care to the community that regulates it (NACCHO, 2018). Social health services or teams are the multi-disciplinary teams based approaches that are multi-skilled and delivers a varied range of services from within the ACCHS. They can be very well regarded as the gold standard of mental health service provision and social and emotional well-being (AIH, n.d.).

Social and emotional wellbeing- ACCHS

Social and emotional well-being has been regarded as the critical determinant of health outcomes among Indigenous Australians (Langham et al., 2017). The screening of SEWB has been defined as the sensitive and complex process that should occur within a culturally sensitive and comprehensive environment. ACCHS works upon embedding and integrating the screening, early detection, and administration of social and emotional wellbeing concerns as a component of its preventive health focus. ACCHS works in order to provide holistic and specialized counseling to the survivors of the stolen generation. In the process to provide primary health care services, social and emotional wellbeing has been promoted to be supported by organizations like ACCHS (Day amp Francisco, 2013). The uptake of the term SEWB has been critically reflected upon the holistic concepts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health that has been traced upon the efforts of providing specialized care by these Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organizations to define health according to the view of Aboriginal standards. Health care services provided by the organizations within the scope of ACCHS intend to encourage the social and emotional wellbeing of the people who have been looked upon as the whole-life-view approach (Gee et al., 2014).
