Principles of Citizen Engagement

Question : Write 200–450 words describing your perspective on how the two documents from Alberta––the Alberta Social Policy Framework and the Alberta College of Social Workers Policy Framework––reflect SUFA’s principles of citizen engagement, accountability and transparency, and Woodford and Preston’s ideas.

Identify how you think these framework documents are helpful to you:

  • as a citizen
  • as a social worker and
  • as a social welfare policy analyst

Answer: A social policy framework is designed to determine the future direction of a community in terms of its community work and welfare of its citizens. The Albert’s social policy framework is one such fine example that reflects the aspirations of the community as people and also gives the Albertans equal and fair opportunities to reach their potential and acquire the maximum number of possibilities for themselves (O’ Hara, 2005 )

The policy framework provides them with tools that help in making better decisions and support the alignment of the same with regard to all that is achievable in the future.

The policy framework is comprehensive that gives the citizen to actualize their potential and live with dignity. It gives them the guidelines and the description of the roles and responsibilities if they want to make the desired outcomes as a community, a reality. Therefore, as a citizen it is extremely relevant and pivotal. Woodford and Preston argue that strategies such as institutionalizing participation and promoting government accountability are ways of ensuring more meaningful citizen engagement.

As social worker it gives one the opportunity to engage with a policy framework that is ideal, relevant and extremely inclusive. The framework engages all citizens to be duly responsible and accountable while forging the way towards employability, dignified living and overall development of the community as whole. It includes the scope of betterment for everyone, from the elderly to the socially marginalized and it provides them with the opportunity to improve the quality of their life. It also promotes citizen engagement ship and when it comes to employment opportunities it promotes accountability of the government. (McDaniel et al, 1993 ).

As a social policy analyst one can see how thorough, ideal and aware the framework is. The social, environmental and economic objectives are in perfect alignment as is needed for a policy to work (Beland, 2005 ).
