Assessment Task 1: Prepare a reference list on a justice topic

1. Define a primary, secondary and tertiary source.

Primary source: These sources are first-hand accounts of a topic. These are immediate and are available from the people who have a direct connection with it. Example: Original Documents like Diaries and Interviews.

Secondary source: These are the sources created by the people who did not participate in the events that are researched. These sources are created later by the person who did not experience first-hand. Example: Book Reviews and Encyclopaedias.

Tertiary source: These are the sources that abstract and compile other sources and are based on a collection of primary and secondary sources. Example: Textbooks and Manuals.

2a. This task requires you to choose ONE justice topic from the list below. Please highlight your chosen topic.

  • Policing in Victoria
  • Gang Violence
  • Family & Domestic Violence

  • 2 books (HINT: They can be on-line books)

Book 1: Alcohol-related violence: Prevention and treatment, M McMurran

Book 2: Dealing with alcohol: indigenous usage in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, S Saggers and D Gray

  • 2 journal articles (HINT: Try searching the Holmesglen databases)

4. Now that you have located your sources, choose ONEbook and write an example of in-text citation. HINT: Remember, an in-text citation is simply the author’s surname, year of publication and page number if it is a direct quote e.g. (Brown, 2018, pg. 28)

5. Now it is time to prepare your reference list using the Holmesglen APA 6th style guide!

Remember, this will need to be on a separate page and in alphabetical order based on the author’s surname. If there is no author, you can use the name of the organisation.
