Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice

Nurses and health practitioners find it important to provide education and critical care to pregnant women, during labour and childbearing. The critical appraisal journals discussed herein are as critical as they are important since they provide insights into the best courses of action to ensure that nurses devote themselves exclusively to help mothers during labour and childbearing. The appraisal herein also discusses in depth the clinical bottom line and the aspects that nurses should consider to create a good relationship between them and mothers.

The Rationale for Selecting This Study

Nurses provide critical care and education to pregnant women during and after childbirth. The quality of the provided healthcare and education significantly influences the health status of both the mother and newborn (Dimbuene et al., 2018). In most cases, pregnant women miss the appropriate education or receive poor healthcare while in labour or after childbirth. The poor services offered to raise the risk of contracting diseases during childbirth or after birth. Journal of nursing management, published by Lake and other researchers (2019), critically address the association between the nursing environment and missed nursing care on labour and childbirth. The study focuses on eliminating the gap that many researchers have raised in their literature and is concerned with the importance and factors influencing the provision of appropriate care in labour wards. Also, the study is essential for the achievement of long-term career aspiration goals since it prepares nursing professionals for their future work environment.

Critical Appraisal

The term critical appraisal is better understood as the systematic process of pieces of evidence on research to determine its trustworthiness, the presumed relevance in a particular field and context (Marcus, 2018). The critical appraisal, in this case, allows clinicians and medical practitioners to make the use of research evidence more reliably and efficiently. It is also the use of transparent and explicit methods to assess the information provided in a research that is published, with the application of rules to factors of evidence such as adherence to reporting standards, internal validity, generalizations and conclusions. Therefore, it is very critical for this research to use the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) as a vital analysis tool (Brennan, 2019).

The subject question in this assignment is "in pregnant women, does missed essential nursing care during labour and childbirth harm women and newborn after delivery?" The paper used in the appraisal is " link to the work setting to missed nursing care in labour and childbirth." The research journal by the Lake is relevant in the nursing field especially missed nursing care during childbirth and labour because its main aim was to ascertain the association between the misses care by nurses during labour and delivery and the nurse work environment. The journal also gives insight into the negative impacts that may result from missed nursing care on the women and the newborns after delivery, such as maternal mortality and morbidity.

The journal is also considered to be valid because it gathers evidence secondary data from a group of staff nurses from two hundred and forty-seven hospitals and health facilities from the four-state survey for nurses collected from the year 2005 to 2008. The Lake's journal is also validity is also evident from the journals result section. From this section, half of the care nurses missed care within the range of zero to one hundred per cent across the two hundred and forty-seven hospitals under investigation. The journal states that on average, the nurses 1.25 of every ten activities. From the journal evidence, the most common activities that got missed out during the nursing activities are talking or comforting the pregnant mothers, and teaching and providing counselling activities to the expectant and labouring mothers. The frequency for missed care by nurses was significantly evident and could be curbed for better services to the labouring mothers and newborn babies.

The research questions in this paper are better articulated in the research and answers to them are satisfactory, confirming the relevance and validity of the journal and the research design is appropriate for the questions of research. The journal is considered relevant for its propositions when well-articulated into the nursing activities help in the better management of the patients and the targeted group. The journals relevance is also evident in the conclusion as it provides a management plan which modifies and influences the issues of missed care. The journal concludes by urging the nurses and managers to discuss missed care to identify and act upon evident weaknesses.

Clinical Bottom Line

The study was developed through a critical review of two research papers and the addition of secondary data gathered in a survey conducted by staff nurses in 247 hospitals. The reviewed papers show a clear prospective crossover design in clinical studies (Cockcroft, 2019). The selected papers and gathered secondary information provide the research with strong evidence in terms of the experimental designs and implementation. According to the results of the study, some nurses miss essential nursing activities and end up compromising comfort, psychological, and educational needs of labour ward patients. Missing some of the nursing activities influences the quality of services offered and nursing outcomes. The nursing team and medical providers should create a good relationship among themselves which will guarantee their patients quality services on labour and delivery. Precisely, the paper narrows the literature research gaps by showing how the nursing work environment relates to nursing care on labour wards (Edwards, 2019).

Conclusion on Answering Queries and Developing Systematic Reviews

In conclusion, the nursing practices are essential in every stage and state of pregnancy since they equip pregnant mothers with appropriate knowledge crucial for pre- and post-labour days. Every pregnant should take the necessary precautions and recommendations as advised by their nurses and other medical practitioners in case of any challenge during the pregnancy cycle. Nurses and medical providers are obligated to ensure full support and responsibility when handling the expectant mothers.
