The health workforce policy change has a greater influence on the nursing profession through the changes that have been incorporated for the improvement of health outcomes of Australia’s first peoples. Some commitment and action have been taken by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA) to close the gaps in health outcomes particularly for improving psychological services offered.
“Professional indemnity insurance arrangements registration standard” has also changed that does not set a minimum amount of PII cover. An appropriate run-off cover is also required (Psychology Board of Australia, 2020). Achieving equity in health outcomes is one of the major aims of policy change. The workforce mobility across Australia is facilitating through this policy change (Psychology Board of Australia, 2020). The service offerings are facilitated to be following public interest. This also led to innovation in education, delivery of service and health practices.
It will strengthen the regulation as one of the major objectives of global strategy for accessing human resources for safe and quality care across the world. Though the global health workforce is mobile and can cross the borders, the Australian health workforce policy is applicable only into Australian territory (AHPRA and National Boards, 2020). The attempt of the Australian board to improve guidelines and polices has a small number of resources while global workforce policy has been backed up by cross country practitioner education, competence and conduct. Recently APHRA has collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) in proving technical support to achieve desired workforce regulatory outcomes. Along with this, it supports WHO to promote approaches to contemporary regulatory adoption along with improving capacity, knowledge and skills of the regulatory board members (AHPRA and National Boards, 2020).
Improvement in health workforce policy change will benefit Australia’s Aboriginal people in different ways ranging from increasing access to culturally safe care along with greater access to healthcare practitioners. The policy change will also help these people to voice their health needs in future and their social and emotional wellbeing will be prioritised (Franks & Franks, 2019).
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency will share the costs with the boards based on an agreed formula. All the financial and historical data will be considered for estimating the cost proportion (AHPRA and National Boards. 2020). The policy mainly poses financial implications in some specific areas like training the health professionals, professional development of the health practitioners, community consultation and others.
The primary aspects when discussing the influence of the policy on health workforce capacity are related to improvements in the quality of training as well as a broadening of the horizon of knowledge. It has also led to a higher degree of adaptability along with ensuring that the different actors in the Australian health workforce can respond to the needs and interests of diverse patient’s groups (Psychology Board of Australia, 2020).
