(a) Identify and explain Brookfield’s four components of critical thinking
The four components of Brookfield’s critical analysis model include the following:
1. Determine and provoke expectations: In this component of the critical thinking model, every aspect is considered to be at its frontal beliefs.
2. Provoke the significance of the conditions: Every action that is executed by an individual are arranged in a specific background (Song,2018) .
3. Think and analyse prospects: It is the process to think about the way in which a task can be executed in a unique perspective.
(b) Standard 1 of the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016) requires that an RN ‘Thinks critically and analyses nursing practice’. How would you demonstrate that you are developing this skill when you are on clinical placement?
A registered nurse should have a proper understanding of the various types of transformations so that they are able to examine the students in terms of the various established code of conducts. Also, they are required to analyse whether the expertise of the concerned students is in alignment with the different codes of conduct in nursing. In order to execute the same, a registered nurse should adopt a systematic procedure for making a secured as well as an adequate standard of taking care of the sick people as per the relevant standard for the same. Moreover, it is even important to maintain individual care as well as expert attitudes. Furthermore, proper assistance is given for making an outline of a particular assignment, on the basis of which a suitable and secured execution of treatment can be delivered to concerned patients. In this context, it is important to analyse the pros and cons of a particular situation and accordingly take the decision of implementing a treatment.
2. Caring for the Community
a) In this unit we discussed 9 C ’s of Caring.
Here are the 4 C’s of Caring:
1. Commitment- The living journey of a nursing staff can be provoking at many times as they are not needed to comprise with the requirements of their clients. A nurse should give their commitment and perform in the most efficient manner in terms of taking care of their patients.
2. Competence- A nursing staff can showcase their expertise at the place of their work in numerous manners. Also, it is important for them to be punctual at their place of work as well as demonstrate themselves as specialist in their profession. Hence, if a nurse wants to gain their expertise, they would be required to enhance their competencies in a constant manner.
3. Conscience: In order to offer the most effective services to the clients, it is important for a nurse to demonstrate an uninterrupted feeling of ethical accountability, emerging from being highly aware.
4. Compassion: It is important for a nurse to show empathy in her performance in terms of her nursing accountabilities. It is the empathy of a nurse only that generates a favourable outcome for their patients.
(b) Explain how these FOUR can be demonstrated by nurses in practice, with an example for each.
A nursing staff can demonstrate that she is committed towards her profession by means of going ahead to take further education in her respected field (Silva et al., 2018), . He or she can take up a virtual degree in nursing that is considered to be extremely significant in terms of acquiring a greater level of understanding in her relevant work role. Such a high level of commitment will enable a nursing staff to improve her expertise as well as provide a better quality of care to her patients.
A nursing staff should also take the initiative to comply with their own instincts that will allow her to meet the objectives of their profession. A nursing staff should continuously perform from the side of her client and also convey about the problems as well as feelings of her patients.
In order to demonstrate competence a nursing staff should take an initiative to undergo a virtual training module that offers expertise required to provide the most effective treatment to their clients while upgrading themselves with the recent professional development competencies.
In order to demonstrate confidence, a nursing staff would be required to act in a dedicated manner, go after their instinct and perform with expertise even in the most complicated condition.
3. Ethics in nursing
Please answer the following two questions based on the following scenario: You are working as a nurse in an aged care facility during an acute gastroenteritis outbreak. Many of the residents are affected by the symptoms of gastroenteritis (with various degrees of severity), but not all. Some residents have cognitive impairments, other do not. Some residents’ family members are insisting they be allowed to access their relative’s daily report. Some need to be allocated treatment-related resources that may deprive others. For example, nurses and other staff need to give residents affected by gastroenteritis more diligent and regular attention with toileting and person hygiene. Residents affected have been moved to single rooms with all new linen that is changed frequently that has resulted in restriction of linen available to other residents. Residents not affected are given a lower priority and sometimes need to wait longer for assistance with activities of daily living as staff are very busy. Extra personal protective equipment needs to be purchased and this has impacted on the faculty budget so extra activities such as music and art therapy has been reduced for that month.
(a) Briefly describe the nature of the power relation between nurses and patients in this scenario. In the light of this, explain why the fiduciary model is the legally prescribed model of the nurse/patient relationship.
As per the above scenario, a nursing staff should give relevant authority to their clients to take significant decisions in terms of taking care of themselves. The connection between a nursing staff and her clients generates authority that is in the direction of the nursing staff as it totally depends on them to give importance to a patient on the basis of its critical nature and the requirement of the condition (Bayoumi et al., 2017).
In this context, the fiduciary model is known to be lawful theory of the relationship between a nursing staff and the patient because it gives the most important consideration to the clients. This is because, a nursing staff has a greater level of understanding and experience than the client who is absolutely blank about medical treatment and care.
(b) There are ethical considerations that arise in this scenario. Discuss two of these considerations, explaining their ethical nature by utilising one or more theories or principles you have learned about in this unit.
1. Fidelity: A nursing staff should be dedicated depending on their expertise in terms of taking care of their patients. It was significant for the nursing staff to provide an effective and regular care to their clients and also should have taken care of the cleanliness of the patients suffering from gastroenteritis. The nursing staff should have been more competent in their delivery in terms of the given scenario.
2. Justice: It should be the duty of nurse to treat all their patients in an equal manner. But in the above scenario impartiality was demonstrated as all the residents was not given equal care and some of them were given very less importance which is not considered to appropriate as per the nursing principle (Haddad et al., 2020). As per the given scenario the nursing staff should have demonstrated a higher level of professionalism in their conduct and should have treated all patients equally.
