1. Introduction to Goal Setting

The goal means a target to which one can direct his efforts. Goal setting is the process that helps in attaining the goals. The goal-setting theory relates to the premise that acquainted goals affect action and that acquainted human behavior is determined and structured by individual goals. It is true that the goal set should follow the SMART criteria means it should be specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and timely (Ogbeiwi, 2017). The process of goal setting includes the goal design, pathway generation, and allowing feedback for any improvements. The second major step of goal setting is pathway generation. It is a vital step that is responsible for creating a pathway to achieve the goals set by me. The last step of goal setting is to allow for feedback. It is the most crucial step as it enables me to adjust my efforts, diligence, and strategy with the response in getting (Shoaib & Kohli, 2017). This essay is set to discuss my goals in relation to the ongoing study and career. Further, it discusses the obstacles that may come while setting goals and their solutions also at the same time.

2. Primary Goal

The primary goal that I want to achieve is to become a product manager in a software company within this year after completing post-graduation in MBA.

3. Sub-Goals

I have set certain sub-goals that I want to achieve to accomplish to become a product manager. I aim to attain competencies to assume leadership and entrepreneurial positions. Moreover, I aim to understand the importance of consumer behavior with management study so that there comes no obstacle in bringing a product to market. Furthermore, I also aim to enhance my skills with respect to human resource management, time management, communication, enterprise management, and more by focusing more on these concepts in the MBA. It is due to the fact that these are the basic skills that one has to acquire to take on a managerial role in an organization (Ahuja & Ahuja, 2016).

3.1. Understand Consumer Behavior

To know the tastes and visions of customers about particular products and services, it is essential to know consumer behavior (Kostadinova, 2016). I want to develop these skills also to be a competent product manager.

3.2. Skill Development

Another sub-goal that I have set to attain is to develop my skills with respect to time management, communication, human resource management, and enterprise management by learning these concepts in the course of MBA. These skills help me in attaining the chief goal of becoming a successful product manager.

4. Obstacles and Solutions

One such obstacle is fear of failure, success, and the unknown. It may relate to the unpredictable consequences in the future business environment and hence it creates a fear of failure for me to be successful in the role of product manager. However, this fear can be overcome by certain strategies like I need to identify the source of fear, reframe beliefs about the goals set, learn to think positive and visualize all probable outcomes (Morgan & Sisak, 2016). Furthermore, the obstacle that may arise is a lack of mentorship meaning that leaders may be absent that can help me in learning and following his direction or autocracy in leadership practices. The ultimate solution to this is to develop leadership skills in myself so that I do not need any mentor to guide or direct me (Eneh, O. C. (2017).

5. Feedback

The feedback that I receive in respect of my goals states that I have to refine my sub-goals like building teamwork skills, build my self-awareness skills, in order to become a successful product manager. Furthermore, positive comments on other student's goals have been placed on the discussion board that shows they have adopted a right and a perfect path to achieve their goals in a career. One comment is "that is a really great path in becoming successful in life". Another constructive comment states that "you are on the right track, but perhaps you must have to improve further on your leadership skills. All the feedback I receive for myself and see comments on other students' goals enables me to refine my own goal to become a product manager in a competitive organization. I am still refining my sub-goals and developing as per the enhancement of my knowledge.

6. Conclusion on Goal Setting

However, there may come obstacles like fear of failure, and lack of mentorship that could be solved by identifying the root causes of fear, and by building robust leadership skills in myself.
