Implications for meeting leaders
The paper describes how a team leader is ineffective in leading meetings. The research in the paper shows and some critical points about the abilities of people so that they can recognize their unethical behaviour for creating the values during the meetings. The leaders in the meeting tend to rely on their intuitions rather than think and making the decisions deliberately. To associate with the deliberative decision making, leaders require to compare instead of analyzing the decisions on their own and they should not focus on how the decision in meeting impact the meeting. Decision making sounds more ethical when leaders tradeoffs that prepare values for all people involved (Brown et al., 2016).
This paper provides a summary of the research-based conditions regarding the factors that should be taken by the leaders during pre-meeting and post-meeting. Conversely, the research paper also shows the continuously thoughtful meeting set and preparation that exemplified some specific features make the stage more effectively. It depends on the leaders how they organize the meetings; leaders can lead the meeting effectively or they can lead the meeting ineffectively (Cenere et al., 2015).
For leading the meeting effectively leaders need to prepare some pre-meeting factors that incorporate consideration of all the agendas of meeting carefully, also considered about the people who require to be on the first place during the meeting. It is also necessary to keep in mind, the skill level of the leaders. It is required to address these issues effectively, if the leader failed to tackle these issues effectively then it will become very difficult for the leaders to lead the meeting effectively. On the other hand,
addressing these issues effectively does not always give the guarantee of a successful meeting. However, failing to address these issues makes the leader the ineffective and it will become harder to achieve the desired output of the meeting. According to the meeting process, an emerging research base shows what happens during the meeting in terms of the behaviour of attendees and leaders, either their behaviour can break the meeting or their behaviour can make the meetings (Bazerman, 2020).
Some of the factors that lead the meeting ineffectively are straight forward like do not taking care of all the documentation of meeting properly and appropriately and do not keep status and track of time. The other things are trickier, if it relates to the group dynamics, that is the negativity cycle and complaining cycle. These are the challenges for the meetings that need to address to make the meeting very effective. Addressing these group dynamics requires more and additional efforts that require to out in conducting the meeting. On the other hand, if move beyond the necessary proximal outcomes of the meeting, that is, if leaders complete all the activities effectively and solve all the issues and make the decisions then the meeting will be effective otherwise not effective (Hellmann, 2019).
Research shows that it is necessary for the leader to keep in mind what happened before the meeting and what happened after the meeting, maybe after the meeting the attitude of the employees change. If the meeting is not effective then the employee’s behaviour gets worse and if the employees are looking satisfied then it means the leader conveyed the thoughts very clearly. The ineffective meeting often concentrates leaving the employee frustrated and its cam also triggers the possible burnout of the employees and exhaustion can also occur. On the other hand, good meetings can occur to boost the morale of the employees in general. It is beyond the context of meetings. The ineffective meeting is the place where trust among the employees break and it does not grow where leaders do not follow the relationships and the relationships among the leaders and employees are not shaped and not maintained.
The negative leaders also influence the employees adversely and the dynamics of the team also gets affected and all other dynamics managed ineffectively that leads to the negative outcomes. The ineffective meetings lead to a negative mood of the group and attendees and the team goes to the negative spiral and it also derails the team and it also leads to the negative proximal result in terms of creativity. The ineffective meeting leads to the meeting dissatisfaction and performance is also not good. The leaders must know that meetings also influence the outcomes of the organizational level. At the first and macro level, the behavioural dynamics noted during the daily team meeting are associated with the functioning of the organization at large, and even though the value creation is of shareholders (Hoban, 2018).
In most of the cases, the leaders who plan and conducts the meeting are general managers, and the attendees are his/her team members. If the manager wants to make the meeting very effective than the leader must develop the program by taking these steps in mind or by addressing these issues. If the manager of a leader failed to address these issues then meeting becomes ineffective.
Negative loops or complaining cycle in which team gets stuck.
If the manager or leader find it difficult and not able to motivate the employees during the meeting.
If the leader is unable to make a balance among the meeting’s intended agenda and conversely questions, concerns and flexible accommodation.
If there are more silent attendees and more introvert participants.
Preparing motivation ideas for implementing towards taking more responsibilities and wants to get involved in more activities.
Unable to handle situations that show up during the meeting (Hansen et al., 2017).
The paper described the leaders who lead the meeting effectively and unable to meet the expectations of the meeting. There were several reasons described in the paper that leads the meeting ineffectively. The leaders must consider all the pre factors and post factors of the meeting to lead the meeting effectively if failed in doing so, it will lead to meeting ineffectively. Meeting and conferences are the most important and should not be overlooked for getting the desired output.
