Organisational Behaviour and People Management

As per Shenoy, there are several type of powers vested with the responsibilities of a project manager (Dehghan et al., 2015). Some of them are discussed below:

Legitimate power: In any organization a team leader is given free hand to determine the way their team is going to perform. Having autonomy to evaluate and execute performance appraisals and other benefits to the employees.

(1)Reward power: Being a manager, one has the right to reward their employees based on performance which helps in keeping them motivated towards their duties.

(2)Guilt-based power: A project manager has to convey clear message to their employees if their performance is not matching as per expectation.

(3)Punishment power: This power is exercised by management heads only under abnormal circumstances when an employee after several reminder is not bringing any improvement.

According to Usmani (2019), a project manager needs to show clear and diverse approach for being more effective in performing managerial duties, taking care of the needs and safety of the employees and these powers can act as a positive catalyst and further enhances the overall productivity of the team thus helps in maintaining efficient delivery and maintaining the quality of services. A project manager also needs to gain influence which sometimes can be tedious but once it is achieved, has numerous advantages like enabling employees to maintain timely delivery of desired activity or product as in case of EWS, it is interested towards a new product which can cause no harm or minimum harm to the environment and its employees.

Influence and manipulation has a very fine line of separation which is often used by managers to get their work done.
