2A.1 Customs

The people of Australia are proud of their progress and heritage. Their tastes in fashion and entertainment are different from those in North America and Europe. The important aspects of Australian popular culture are drinking and gambling. It has been the custom to have beer. The contributions of Aboriginal and immigrant communities can be seen in the cuisine of Australia. However, it has been greatly influenced by the Anglo-Celtic heritage of the country. It has been a custom of celebrating different festivals which affects the cultural practices of Australia.

2A.2 Family Structures

Many indigenous people in Australia have their own culture. The family values are strong within this group that is beyond the loyalties of a nuclear family. They use the word ‘kinship’ so that they can relate to everyone as their sister, mother, grandfather and so on irrespective of their blood relationship. However, this traditional family structure is no more a real social standard in Australia. Individualism is valued. The average household in Australia is classified as nuclear family. The cultural idea that pervades is that people are expected to be self-reliant and accountable for their decisions. Also, 49% of the people of Australia atleast have a single parent born overseas. Thus, these multicultural families can have traditions and customs of their own country.
