Reflect on And Improve Own Professional Practice

Introduction to Professional Development Plan

The increasing prevalence of the mental health-related issue in the population increases the need for the health care services to be effective to address the specific issue of the individual. The registered nurses in the mental setting are expected to be efficient to deliver quality care by justifying the professional role. In the mental health setting registered nurses are expected to understand individual physical a swell well issue that needs to be addressed immediately (Bjorkman et al., 2018). The nurse’s professional development is important to deliver quality care to the patient by considering the professional standard and working principles in the care. The reflective practice is important to identify the gap in the clinical practice that is needed to be addressed to improve the care (Rheingans, 2016). The report is going to discuss the professional development plan that is important to justify the role of the registered nurse in the mental health setting.

Professional Development Plan

Enhance Own Practise and Establish the Goal

After reflecting over my clinical practice I identify some of the gaps in the care that are needed to be improved to justify the professional practice concerning the registered nurse role. One of the issues that are decreasing my quality of the professional practice is cultural competency that directly set back me during the conversation with the diverse population in the setting. The study presented by Aggarwal et al. (2016) discussed that registered nurse are expected to be culturally competent in the care that will help to improve patient satisfaction and care in a mental health setting.

Another issue that I have identified after reflecting over my own practise is lack of therapeutic communication skills that are important for partnering with the patient in the care. The study presented by Furnes et al. (2018) discussed that therapeutic communication is important to improve the understanding of the patient concerning the care that is important to increase patient participation in the care.

The supervisor on the shift also informed me that I need to improve communication in the care that will improve my clinical practise. The article presented by Mills, J. (2017) discussed that communication is important to improve person-centred care by collaborating with the patient in the mental health setting.

The goal for professional development is I will try to improve my cultural competent skills and therapeutic communication within four weeks to improve my clinical practice.

What Will You Do to Achieve the Goal

To attain the goal I will try to improve by understanding concerning the diverse population and their belief my attending the workshop framed to improve cultural competency. The study presented by Truong et al., (2017) discussed that workshop conducted for the health care professional are helpful to understand the different cultural belief and values of the patient that are important concerning the care. The workshop will help to improve the participants understanding related to the different aspect that needs to be considered in the care to improve cultural competency in the care.

Another method that I will utilize to improve my cultural competency is taking with the diverse population in the organization that will help me to understand their perspective which is important to improve cultural competency. One of the studies presented by Clifford et al. (2015) discussed that diverse workforce in the organization improve the cultural competency and individual can interact with the diverse workforce to improve their understanding concerning the cultural belief and values. The interactions with peers are important to relate the different cultural belief with the clinical practice that improves the implementation process.

Therapeutic communication can be improved by attending the communication workshops and training session to improve therapeutic communication skills. The study presented by Moore et al. (2018) discussed that communication workshops are considered to be bliss for the health care professional as they help them to improve communication skills that are important for the care. The workshop helps the health care professional to learn the different communication approach like verbal and nonverbal approaches, active listening approach to improving communication skills.

The second approach that I will use to improve my therapeutic communication is attending the organization training that is important to understand the right approach for effective commination in the mental health setting. The study presented by Buljac-Samardzic et al. (2020) discussed that organizational communication training is considered to be more effective while addressing the lack of communication skill in the workforce. Organizational training helps the individual to identify the specific gap in the skills that need to be improved to deliver effective communication in the care.

Timeframe to Achieve the Goal

To improve cultural competency with therapeutic communication I will attend the different session alternatively so that I can manage them with the work and provide them with equal time to learn new approaches. The alternate approach will help me to learn a new approach and apply them in a clinical setting to understand my understanding with the impact of the approach in the clinical setting.

Different barriers can hamper the implementation of the changes in the practice and thus there is a need to reduce the barriers to improve the practice. One of the issues that decrease approach that can reduce the chances of attainment to the goal is the workload that decreases the chances of improving the practice. This Can be reduced by the effective time management in the care that will help to designate particular time to the individual task to manage the work accordingly. The study presented by Ghiasvand et al. (2017) discussed that time management is important in nursing to manage the delegated work as per the shift and it helps them to spare the time to reflective over their practice. The time management will help to improve the schedule which will set the workflow accordingly to attend different session to improve practise.

Another barrier that can decrease the goal attainment process is the lack of support from the management that will eventually decrease the individual ability to implement the change in practice. The lack of support from the management can be addressed by discussing the issue with the supervisor to explain the importance of change and need for their support. The article presented by Bos et al. (2015) indicates that the supervisor is considered to be the first line of contact by the nurses during any issue. The clinical supervisor helps the nurses in the personal as well as professional growth that is important to deliver quality care in the practice.

How to Measure the Progress

The review process is important to analyse the improvement in the individual practises concerning the change in the clinical practice. The first approach that will be utilized for the review process in the reflective practises that help to compare clinical practice with Standards of Practice in Mental Health Nursing. The Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (2020) proposed the nine standards that are important for registered nurses to deliver quality care in the mental care setting. Another aspect that will be considered to be the review process will include the feedback from the clinical supervisor that will help to identify the expert view concerning the clinical practice. The article presented by Nowell et al. (2015) discussed that nurses are expected to consult the clinical practise efficiency concerning the registered nurse standards.

Development of The Professional Development Plan

The four-week scenario will be alternatively dedicated to the workshops and the training concerning the cultural competency with therapeutic communication. I will attend all the sessions that are included in the workshops of the cultural competency and will contact the diverse workforce during the staff break time. The organizational communication session will be attended as per the work routine and I will attend the communication training session alternatively to improve my practice.

After the four week duration, I will review my clinical practice by considering the standards that are important to deliver quality care in the mental health setting. I will also consider the feedback provided by my supervisor to evaluate by professional practise to estimate the success of the professional development plan. After gaining the feedback I will reframe my practise as per the supervisor comments to improve the clinical practise that will help me to justify the professional role as a registered nurse.

Conclusion on Professional Development Plan

The report can be concluded by adding that the professional development plan is important to identify the gap in the clinical practises by reframing the practice. The two areas that need to be improved are cultural competency and therapeutic communication to justify the professional role as a registered nurse in a mental health setting. The development plan includes attending the workshop and training session to improve cultural competency and therapeutic communication. The next step of the plan is the review process that includes reflective practise to compare the practice with standards practice followed by considering the feedback of the supervisor. The last step of the plan includes identifying the issue discusses in the feedback of the supervisor to improve the practice.
