Professional and Discipline Studies in Nursing

Professionalism is the basic working practice in the nursing profession as they are directly connected to the patient and their action influences the health status of the patient. According to Shohani and Zamanzadeg (2017), professionalism in the nursing profession includes a different aspect that is knowledge and skill regarding standard activity, leadership quality, social values and self-discipline. According to me professionalism include all those factors that should be followed to satisfy the need of the profession and when it comes to nursing profession one has to be extra careful during the working process.

During my placement, I realized that professionalism impacts the working practice of the nurses and it also influences their behaviour toward the patient. The most important aspect that should be included in the nursing profession is effective communication that will help the healthcare associates to effectively transfer their thought among colleagues and increasing understanding of the patient regarding any issue. The direct relation of the nurses with the patient increases their credibility toward their health status and professionalism help the nurses to provide the best care to the patient. This was also discussed in the article proposed by Movahedi, Rahnavard, Salsali and Negarandeh (2016), that effective communication can help the nurses to create a relationship with the client that will help the nurse to recognize the patient need and provide him/her with the best intervention. Effective communication not only provides a positive impact on the patient’s health but it also positively impacts the working practice of the nurse. During my placement, I was instructed to take vitals of the patient and he was very uncomfortable during the conversation because he was unable to understand what I want to convey.

During this scenario, my mentor analyzed this and explained to me the importance of standards related to the nursing profession. After this scenario, I realized that in the nursing profession following code of conduct will improve your working practice and it also influences the health status of the patient. The article proposed by Cashin et al. (2017), also discusses that the nurses are expected to follow the nursing standards so that they can provide quality care to the patient and work according to the basic standards. The standards allow the nurses to understand what nursing profession expects and how they can include all these practices in working procedure. The standards are regulated to increase the understanding of the nurses toward the profession and it also provides the opportunity to nurses so that they can utilize their education, capability to guide patient during care.

During the conversation with the patient who was in pain make me realized that as nurse empathy should be present that will increase understanding of the nurses toward the patient situation. Empathy helps you to understand the situation of the patient that can be used to provide the best assistance during care. Empathy is a powerful communication tool that builds patient trust, improve health status and reduce the issue faced by the patient. Role of empathy was also discussed in the article proposed by Kahriman et al. (2016), the researcher discussed that empathy is a multidimensional approach and it is not only limited to understanding the patient but nurses are considered to analyze the patient situation and work accordingly. During my placement, I also released that how every patient cannot be treated same and there is need to understand the different perspective of the patient to provide him/her with patient-centred care to improve the health status. The patient-centred care provides a better opportunity for the patient to respond to the different intervention as they are tailored according to the need of the patient. According to Kuipers, Cramm and Nieboer (2019), the major aim of patient-centred care is to provide the care to the according to his/her preference and values that ensure good health outcome. The article also discusses the eight dimensions of patient-centred care and how it can lead to positive outcomes that include job satisfaction, patient satisfaction.

In the nursing profession, nurses should have effective communication to ensure that they can convey their thought and this also increase understanding toward different individuals. The code of conduct proposed for nurses are equally important in the nursing profession and it should be followed during working practice. The different patient face different problem and nurses should show empathy toward their issue so that they can be provided with the best care to improve their health status. The importance of patient-centred care also cannot be neglected and the nurses are expected to provide the tailored care to decrease the recovery time of the patient.
