Literature Review

Part B

Does texting with a stylus create more errors than texting using the fingers?

a. H0: Texting with a stylus does not create more errors than texting using the fingers.

H1: Texting with a stylus creates more errors than texting using the fingers.

b. Four search terms which can be used the gather data:

i. Texting errors using the stylus

ii. Use of fingers in texting and errors

iii. Texting errors comparison fingers and stylus

iv. Errors finger texting and stylus texting

c. Answering the research question:

i. Research design

To undertake this research, descriptive research design can be used. The use of descriptive research will help in identifying the current information and profiling of the phenomenon associated with the research question (Rahi, 2017). Such a research design will be useful in observing and describing the subject’s behaviour without creating an influence on it. Moreover, this will be helpful in the identification of useful characteristics, any possible trends or correlations between the research subjects.

ii. Research method

The research which best suits the hypothesis is the quantitative research method. This research aims to identify if texting with stylus results in more errors than the use of fingers for the same task. Such a research question and corresponding research hypothesis will be complemented by a quantitative research method which uses quantitative data to understand the impact of one subject on the another. In this, statistical methods are used to quantify and interpret the data which will help to test the hypothesis, determine the cause-effect relationship and make predictions (Apuke, 2017).

iii. Sampling technique

There are various sampling techniques which can be used for the sampling of participants for the study. For this particular study, a probability sampling technique will be preferred. This is because such a sampling technique helps in ensuring equal participation chance to the participants which result in low bias in the study (Taherdoost, 2016). A simple random sampling technique is useful as it will provide an equal probability of inclusion in the study. For this, online survey links will be distributed to individuals which will be asked to proceed with the survey if they have also used a stylus for texting. This will also be the inclusion criteria. Those individuals who have not used styluses will not be included.

d. Surveymonkey is one of the survey tools which will be used to design and launch the survey request (Survemonkey, n.d.). It is an interactive survey tool which offers various functions to the users. It has an intuitive user-interface which is user-friendly and allows the users as well as the participants to comprehend the survey easily. The participants will be emailed to explain the reason for the study along with their role in this. Informed consent will be implied in this situation through their acceptance to participate in the survey by clicking on the survey link.

e. The data which is expected to be collected in this includes their understanding of the use of a stylus for texting. Moreover, the survey will help to collect the data to understand which is preferred more by the users, stylus or no stylus. Furthermore, it is expected that the data collected will cover or describe their perceptions of the rate of occurrence of texting errors which can be compared for the occurrence of errors when texting using fingers to errors occurred using the stylus.

f. The research will use both descriptive as well as inferential statistics to report the findings. Firstly, descriptive statistics will be used to interpret the describable information like mean, median, range, standard deviation, skewness of the data. This will be presented using graphical representations. Secondly, inferential statistics will include regression analysis. The regression will be used to develop a regression model which will be tested for the data collected. The model will help in identifying the correlation between errors done using the stylus over the use of fingers for texting. A significant F-test will help in the identification of significance. A statistically significant value (p<0.05) will mean that the null hypothesis is rejected and this will mean that texting with stylus results in more errors than using fingers for texting. If the significance is more than 0.05, this will mean that the null hypothesis is failed to be rejected. The tests will be interpreted using the finding from the review of literature which will help in the identification of why the results were the way they come out to be.
