Introduction to Positive Interpersonal Processes

In this essay, as a student, I will talk about the interpersonal and intrapersonal processes of the relational history in which the development of the psyche will be discussed along with providing examples of personal experiences and realizations from the past. The theories related to particular areas like the theories of attachment and relationship will be detailed. With the help of contemporary literature, I will be evaluating the discussion. The understanding of ‘self’ and its development, the psychological health of mine as an overall, and the way I generally communicate with the surroundings will be discussed in this evaluation. The impacts of the relationships on my mind and how I usually respond in different situations also will be talked about.

Discussion on Positive Interpersonal Processes

It is said that a relationship is an investment of time and it needs to involve respect and gratefulness. It is widely understood that relationships impact a lot on the human psyche and the past experiences of relationships also help the individual to shape the future. The interpersonal processes of individuals many times determine the quality of the relationships (Algoe, 2019). The way a person communicates and behaves with the other tells us how s/he has been treated in his relationships and in what way s/he is willing to proceed in her/his relationships further. A good deal of interpersonal relationships is very important to make an identity in society. The relationships help us understand the value of our ‘self’ and predict our physical and mental health and happiness in life. The human brain mostly works depending on the experiences it has gathered in the past (Shimek, 2019). The interaction with the others, the regulation of emotions, trust potencies, etc actually depend on how we have been treated before. For example, a child who was not taken care of in its childhood, either generally craves for love throughout the whole life or never understands the meaning of attachment. Interpersonal relationships also depend so much on interpersonal communications. Communication is often symbolic (Algoe, 2019). Silence or distance often symbolizes anger while kisses and hugs symbolize love.

The relationship also depends on the position of the person next to me. For instance, I never behave with my teacher the same way I communicate with my siblings. The societal relationships in this way get changed with time and circumstances. Interpersonal relationships impact on each other as it involves a mutual transaction. I do not remember that I have ever behaved properly with someone who was improper to me. Interpersonal relationships can also change with time(Palmer et al., 2019). A love-relationship can be turned into hatred and the two people who were once indifferent to each other, in course of time can get interdependent. To understand the behavior of the other, we need to know the situations too in which s/he is going through. It helps us to feel for the other in the moment of conflict.

In the past, for a long time, in psychological studies, the ‘self’ and the relationships were considered separate(Mack, 2018). Recently, in several pieces of research, it has been proved that our intrapersonal processes and our relationships with others closely impact each other. A person who has been betrayed several times fears to trust again. It develops a trust issue within the mind. I have seen someone who was not cared for by his parents for long and after a certain point of time, he started to believe that he is impotent and not worthy enough to be loved. Similarly, a person full of ego and pride cannot maintain a relationship properly. In relationships, many times we need to adjust. One who is not happy inside, cannot provide happiness to others(Mack, 2018). To deal with the surroundings positively, we need to stay positive too.

It is often seen that people are suffering from a fear of loss and a kind of separation anxiety. British psychotherapist John Bowlby understands that the children suffer from this anxiety at the time of separation from their caregivers. This anxiety or fear of separation, according to the attachment theory, stays with them for a long period (Fearon & Roisman, 2017). Many times, it can be a lifelong issue too. The impact of the bonds that were made in childhood with the caregivers stays throughout the life of the child. In a long-term relationship, the attachment between the partners also their psychology and the treatment for each other, in this context, shapes the further relationship. Attachment theory also tries to understand the stages of attachment and the impacts of every stage. The influencing factors and the patterns of attachments also have been vividly discussed (Fearon & Roisman, 2017). Every singular type of attachment determines how we will handle further relationships in our upcoming life.

Human well-being has also been discussed in the relational theory of psychology. It is more of atheory that deals with human emotions. Bad emotional health can increase stress and it is vital to be handled properly. Stress and emotional upheaval are often connected to past relationships(Bartlett, 2016). We ask for empathy and need a listening space so that we can develop both ourselves and our relationships in the future.

Reflection of Positive Interpersonal Processes

While doing the research I have concentrated on the interpersonal process and also on the intrapersonal process which is related to relational history (Lane, 2016). I understood that to develop interpersonal relationships it is vital to fulfilling physical and emotional needs. While conducting the research I have developed my sense of self by developing a broader interpersonal style of mine. I want to develop interpersonal relationships with my family members, peers, intimate friends, neighbors, etc. To build psychological health and also to maintain such it is very important to maintain the relationships at every level. I have made the differences based on the relationship by classifying the relations. The interpersonal relationships create an impact on the by creating the mutual transaction (Lane, 2016). Supporting the relationship of interpersonal process outside the classroom can be promoted by the teachers and my teachers has helped me in gaining this interpersonal relationship. They taught me that it is very important for social needs as well as for a sense of self. In regards to interpersonal relationships, I gain knowledge of handling complex situations by facing those in real life (Rubin & Graham, 2020). I also learned one of the other aspects of the interpersonal process of relationship is promoting and encouraging kindness. The teachers and the family members can help to build this. In respect of the intrapersonal process, communication is very vital as I have understood. The way of communicating with selves will directly affect physiological health as well as a sense of self. I have developed my broader intrapersonal process by self communicating styles. By conducting the metallization, I can develop my interpersonal style. I also understand while conducting this self-reflection that the well being of a human is more important in the relational theory of psychology, it helps to develop the physiological health as well (Rubin & Graham, 2020). It is more important than a theory as it deals with emotions. These human emotions play a very major role in our human psychology and it also helps to develop the intrapersonal and interpersonal styles (Subramanian, 2017). By developing these styles, my sense of self has also improvised. And I understood that bad emotional life impacts all styles of communication, process, etc. I also get to know while conducting this research that relationship also depends on the position of the person who is next to me. It means that my behavior will always depend on that person who is behaving with me. If someone shows love and affection for me, in return I will also show the same (Subramanian, 2017). This all I have mainly learned from school and also from my teachers, acquaintances. Not only this the social relationships get changed with time and circumstances and depend on the behavior, communication of human beings.

While conducting the research I came to know that self-sense is a very vital component in any relationship and they are interrelated as well. In several types of research, it has been proved that our intrapersonal processes and our relationships with others closely impact each other. In my reflection, certain emotions in life can affect the self-relationship or the sense of self (Berger & Roloff, 2019). For instance, the person who does not care and loves his children, after a certain while that person will feel that he is not worth love and care. Like that every person should be enriched with self-sense that can be developed mainly through broader intrapersonal and interpersonal processes, styles of communication. The theory like the Attachment theory, Social Penetration theory can be helpful to develop interpersonal relationships and processes (Berger &Roloff, 2019). The reciprocity of the relationships I have understood from these theories.

In the end, it can be concluded in this essay that the interpersonal and intrapersonal processes of the relational history in which the development of the psyche is based on certain theories and perspectives. By taking the help of contemporary literature, the self-sense, interpersonal, and intrapersonal broader way of the process, styles, communications are evaluated and described here as it is mentioned that a healthy relationship depends on emotional and physical life. So it is very crucial to maintain those in respect to relations, societies, etc. The interpersonal process and the intrapersonal process can be developed by the influence of society, classmates, teachers, interpersonal skills, or styles that can be developed easily.
