Communication is defined as a means of exchanging information between the speaker and the receiver through a specific medium. It is focused on communication strategies which can be used by the counsellor to comfort Rossi and identify the communication barrier she is facing in her life. The struggles in life can be easily understood through deep analysis and understanding of the key concepts. A counsellor can use several communication strategies that maintain effective communication outcomes and provide the necessary support to the client.
Rapport refers to a relationship with another person who provides a harmonious understanding of the individuals or group. Rapport building is considered as a process of establishing new relationships or connections with the client or another person by communicating effectively and showing concern to them (Harris & Birnbaum, 2015). It is based on building interpersonal relationships. To build an effective rapport with the client mutual trust is necessary that promotes friendship and affinity. Building rapport is based on active listening skills of the counsellor. I will focus on active listening and establishing trust with the client to build rapport. Respect and understanding is the key to maintain an active discussion that leads to a competitive situation.
Through excellent communication, customer service and attention, required rapport build naturally which enhances the interaction between the counsellor and the client (Jacobs, 2017). Five key elements of rapport building are problem-solving behaviour, active listening, and respect for the client, understanding the need and creating friendship. Shred experiences and views develop mutual trust that leads to promote interpersonal relationships between two individuals (Harris & Birnbaum, 2015). Personalized service is necessary to support the client. I will discuss the basic things and experiences with Mrs. Rossi to gain mutual trust and work for friendship. Active listening can support Mrs. Rossi to feel comfortable and regulate her mood.
Communication strategies are considered as the blueprint of the information or message that is being exchanged between individuals or group. Some of the examples of written communication are email, chat and text while some examples of oral communication are phone calls, video chats and face to face conversations. To facilitate effective communication, I will focus on both verbal and nonverbal communication techniques.
Effective communication is based on active listening where a clean understanding can be developed to communicate with the speaker and listener (Mendes, Paneque, Sousa, Clarke &Sequeiros, 2016). Focusing upon thoughts and feelings of the individual, complete attention is required that can maintain effective communication. Attention for the thoughts, feelings and concerns of the client helps to gain a better understanding to analyze the signs and gestures of the individual which can allow the counsellor to understand the viewpoint of the speaker (Oetzel, 2017).I will implement these strategies through stop being judgmental, pay attention to the client, listen to activity to the details, focus on body language, show empathy, ask relevant questions to demonstrate interest and clarify understanding(Mendes, Paneque, Sousa, Clarke &Sequeiros, 2016).
Paraphrasing for the specific questions can help Mrs. Rossi to answer on the specific points. Through maintaining a good and positive conversation with Rossi, I can try to develop confidence in her that can help her to enjoy different activities and focus on her life. I will pay complete attention to Rossi and her body language and ask appropriate questions that can make her comfortable and feel empathetic to acknowledge her feelings. I will share my experiences with Rossi that can promote positive feedback and help her to value herself.
Barriers of communication are known as the condition of failure or misunderstanding of the communication. Several barriers of communication can be identified by the individuals which are physical, psychological, cultural, linguistic and emotional (Pal, Halder&Guha, 2016). Psychological barriers are known as mental and cognitive barriers that affect effective communication such as speech disorders, stage fear, phobia and depression. These conditions are difficult to manage. Emotional barriers of communication are based on emotional IQ that raises a difficulty for the individuals to express their feelings. Physical barriers are based on the physical separation or distance such as closed doors, noise, closed cabins or faulty equipment that is used by the individuals for communication.
Cultural barriers are mostly occurring in the society where people from different cultures meet with each other. While linguistic barriers of communication are considered with the language-related issues that make difficulty in interpreting the information or message (Pal, Halder&Guha, 2016). For effective verbal communication, different barriers can be identified as unclear language, stereotype and generalized statements, focusing on inferences, dysfunctional responses and lack of confidence (Jacobs, 2017). These barriers can be raised during the conversation which can be avoided by focusing on the issue and concentrating on problem-solving. I will overcome these barriers through distinguished strategies which proceed towards effective communication. Emphasizing on the issue of the client rather than the client can promote problem-solving behaviour and change the opinion as an individual.
Honest and respect promote genuine behaviour in front of the client rather than manipulative. To build mutual trust, genuine behaviour is necessary that maintains integrity. Flexibility is necessary for counselling to bring creativity and analyze different ways of dealing with socio-cultural barriers of Mrs Rossi. Value for the own rights and needs helps the client to gain confidence and receive positive motivation. Positive praises are necessary for Mrs Rossi to gain motivation and attain a positive feeling (Pal, Halder&Guha, 2016).
Ethical consideration is a major element for a counsellor that promotes trust and authentic knowledge. Voluntary participation of the client is necessary for the active participation and gaining trust in counselling (Bond, 2015). A client can trust the client only if there is no harm to personal or social life. The given case study represents that a counsellor needs to maintain confidentiality for the client that promotes trust and show genuine behaviour. Protection and welfare of the clients are necessary that enhances the needs of ethical principles.
Mrs Ross requires privacy and confidentiality for her problems and maintains the treatment to get a better life. Integrity between the practitioner and client is necessary that promotes effective treatment and maintains a quality based counselling. To make ethical decisions for effective considerations is necessary that enhance the communication process. Working according to the laws and regulations in the counselling promotes ethical considerations (Bond, 2015).
I will communicate with three health professionals from different fields to get a better understanding of the issues of Florence Rossi. Dietician, psychologist and community health practitioner will be the three health professionals. Through communication, a better understanding can be achieved that can promote the treatment of Mrs. Rossi. While communicating with the health professionals, I will concentrate towards several ethical considerations that include autonomy, beneficence, justice and non-maleficence (Fleet, Burton, Reeves &Das Gupta, 2016).
The issues of Mrs. Rossi will be shared with the health professions which will promote a benefit to the client and identified in favour of the client. The given information must not harm the client in any manner. Discussion with health professionals must be based on health maximization rather than profit maximization. Efficiency in the treatment must be concentrated on the top to ensure the approach of health professionals. This communication between different health professionals is known as inter-professional communication.
It can raise some challenges which include the understanding of different professional roles, ability to understanding the responsibilities, generational differences, personal values and expectations, personality differences, varying levels of qualifications, the complexity of care, rapid decision making or professional routines. Challenges in the inter-professional communication are based on professional identity and individual behaviour which can be dealt by effective communication and understanding the roles and responsibility of other professionals (Fleet, Burton, Reeves &DasGupta, 2016).
It can be concluded that rapport building is an important phase in counselling that works through effective communication. Active listening is the key to build rapport and maintain mutual respect with the client. Different communication strategies can be identified which are verbal, nonverbal and virtual. Effective communication is based on the efficient use of these styles. Understanding communication and its needs can be enhanced with individual strategies and barrier-less communication.
Barriers in communication possess a major challenge which can be overcome by the individual through genuine behaviour, honest approach, empathetically actions and sharing experiences. Ethical principles guide individuals to behave in an effective manner that would promote effective communication and fulfil the needs of human rights. Inter- professional communication can help in dealing with the situation of Mrs. Rossi although it raises different challenges in communication that can be minimized by understanding and effective communication.
