History

In 1986, the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre can into existence to provide services and aid to communities in far West Ottawa. It a not-for-profit organization that provide health and social services. Since its founding, the WOCRC has shown exponential growth in services and programs (WOCRC, 2018). 

Mission Statement

The WOCRC, in collaboration with other organizations, aims to provide, coordinate and develop reachable health, social and community services for each member of the diverse communities (WOCRC, 2018). They are committed to safeguarding access to quality and permanent French Language services in their chosen services and programs.

Professional Principle

The WOCRC follow four core beliefs which provide guidance in serving the community and are executed in regular interaction with volunteers, client, staff, members and partners. These four principles are; Empowerment, Equity, Partnership and Innovation.

Empowerment- The WOCRC believes that every individual has the right to make choices and control over the decisions of their lives. They are committed to providing resources and information to help people in making sound decisions (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Equity- They believe that people of all age, ethnicity, culture, gender, religion, economical background, nationality and ability has the right to justice and respect. They acknowledge cultural, social and systemic barriers preventing people to have equal access to opportunities and resources (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Partnership- They are committed to creating partnerships laid on the foundation of respect, equality, integrity, responsibility and accountability (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Innovation- They consider innovative ideas as an aid which can transform their vision into a reality, by providing an innovative solution to the assorted and complex problems faced by the communities. They are creating such a learning environment which is dynamic, flexible and acknowledge changes and evolutionary thoughts (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Location of Site

The main building of WOCRC is located at 2 MacNeil Court, Kanata, ON, K2L 4H7 (WOCRC, 2020).

The community support service is located at 30 Edgewater Street, Unit 124, Kanata, ON, K2L 1V8 (WOCRC, 2020).

2. The Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre: Programs and Services

Who is WOCRC?

The Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre is a far west Ottawa based community centre that provides various services, in partnership with other organisations, such as health, counselling, shelter, education and caregiving to children, youth, families, women and older adults while breaking all the barriers of discrimination and biasing.

Programs and Services Offered

Community Support Services- This program offers help to older adults and adults with disabilities to live independent, meaningful and active lives. They provide services to adults suffering from dementia-like transportation, meals on wheels and Adult day program (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Violence Against Women- This program offers individual information, support and referral, advocacy, crisis counselling, housing and transitional support for women and their dependants who have gone through abuse (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Chrysalis House- It was opened in 2004, with a capacity of 25 bed (Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre, 2020). It is a secure and safe haven in Western Ottawa. This place is for women to protect themselves and her dependant from abuse and violence. Here, the supportive environment is created so that women can pay attention to their personal choices and needs and well as look after her dependants (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Counselling Services- This service provides short-term counselling, crisis walk-in, youth counselling and phone support which is free and confidential (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019). 

EarlyON Child and Family Centre- Kanata and West Carleton- This centre provides a range of free services and programs for parents and caretakers of infants to 6 years old toddlers. Their services include training opportunities, drop-in programs, playground, workshops and special events. There is a resource library and the centre also offers information and referral services (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Community Development- The focus is on the development of equity, diversity, advocacy and reducing poverty in rural and suburban areas (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

Children, Youth and Families- The WOCRC offers a variety of programs for children, youth and families that provide learning and coping skills for various issues. Their programs include The Zone Youth Drop-In, FRIENDS, Homework club and workshop for parents and others (2018-2019 Annual report, 2019).

How Did They Help?

  • Organizing opportunities for social interaction among senior citizens.
  • Helping parents in learning to raise a child with more confidence.
  • Offering dedicated short-term counselling for youth and children.
  • Providing services which assist senior citizens in living more independent lives.
  • Providing resources, information and referrals to new citizens of Canada.
  • Providing support and haven to women and their dependants gone through violence and abuse in the home.
  • Providing development of community and promoting health services that raise awareness about social causes of health like education, income, transportation, isolation, poverty, environment and social exclusion (WOCRC, 2018).

Approximately more than 50 employees are working with the WOCRC at various designations like the trainer, manager, program coordinator, director, communication officers.

Volunteers

There are many volunteers currently working with the WOCRC (number of volunteers is unavailable). The main roles and responsibilities of volunteers are to provide company to isolated old adults, deliver meals to old adults and adults with disability, provide assistance in conducting Adult Day program, preschool drop-ins, assisting children and youth with homework, supporting women in violence against women program and other (WOCRC, 2020).
