Last week, a conflict arose between two nurses as they blamed each other for poor patient health. None of them were being accountable for their misconduct that resulted in conflict in the nursing workplace.
I felt bad that due to poor bonding between two nurses, effective and collaborative care was not given to the patient.
The bad part about the event was that conflict among 2 nurses resulted in poor health of the patient. However, the learning/knowledge about conflict management in nursing can be used to resolve the conflict with effective communication and collaboration. In nursing, the code of ethics should be followed which states that the patient or the co-worker in the nursing workplace should be treated with dignity and respect (Schmidt, MacWilliams, & Neal-Boylan, 2017).
The nurses should be accountable for their actions as per the code of ethics for registered nurses (Snelling, 2016). The ethical principle of veracity was applicable because both the nurses during the conflict resolution told the truth about the actual reason for the patient’s poor health by accepting that their negligence towards the patient. Thus, indicating that the duty of care was inefficient and this could lead to legal complications.
The nurses should be taught about the conflict management strategies in nursing like collaborating, compromising, avoidance, and confrontation (Lahana, Tsaras & Kalaitzidou et al., 2019). Such knowledge reduces the conflicts in the workplace and encourages the nurses to follow their code of ethics.
If a similar situation arose again then the conflict management strategies will be used. An open-ended communication can resolve ego-based and issues-based conflicts in nursing (Arveklev, Berg & Wigert et al., 2018).
