Necessity to Build a Fair and Just Society

Having work is a part of everyone's daily life and is significant for the well-being, development and dignity of the person as a human being (Sustainable Development Goals, 2018). The significance and impact of descent work are equally effective and mandatory to develop a fair and just society. The present paper will analyse and discuss the reasons and effects of considering the descent work as a part of the development of a society embedded with fairness and justice. The various research and opinions will be scrutinized to ensure the full understanding of the impact of descent work how it is shaping a better society in the current scenario.

This International concept, nurtured by United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, provided that the need for work is an integral part of the human rights and must be accessed and utilised by every individual (Blustein et al., 2016). The importance of the United Nations declaration of human rights resulted in the focus of the International Labour Organisation in fulfilling this mission of providing decent work to every individual. The emphasis over the provisions of descent work, by international entities like United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and International Labour Organisation, accessible to all individuals, clearly provide a picture of the significance and utility of decent work in building a society which is just and fair for the citizens. The descent work, with attributes like providing a sense of social protection to workers etc as developed by the International Labour Organisation in 1919, was framed as a response to the International labour policies issued and as a part of the treaty of Versailles (Ferraro et al., 2016). The object behind the launching of this decent work is to promote an environment where productive employment and decent factors of equality, security, freedom and human dignity can be provided to every individual.

The four pillars of the Decent Work Agenda of International Labour Organisation suggest further about the significance of this concept in the life of the individuals of society (Frey & MacNaughton, 2016). The first pillar is the rights at work which are providing four core labour standards provided by the International labour organisation conventions. This rights at work included in the first pillar provided for freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining; elimination of discrimination in employment; abolition of child labour and elimination of force for compulsory labour. These four rights will eventually lead to having a better society with better working conditions and safety for adults as well as children. The second period in this regard is about fostering the improvement which is in respect of achieving full employment and provide the accurate and justifiable pay for the work of the workers to reduce the poverty. Ultimately, social protection has been provided as one of the other pillars of the decent work agenda. this policy works in the respect of preventing work-related injuries and illness along with the prevention of excessive working conditions which can affect the health and well-being of the individual. Lastly, social dialogue has been included as the pillar to promote negotiation and agreements between employers and workers at a different level of society straight from the workplace to the national level consultation to enhance the voice of the workers and to pacify the conflicts arising between workers and employers.

The analysis of the rights embedded in the Decent Work Agenda and its pillars is directly influencing the lives of the individuals as a work which is certainly an integral and significant aspect of every individual of the society. The framework and the policies relating to decent work and the proper implementation of those rights will pursue a society to provide better working conditions and life to the individuals. Undoubtedly, these rights are favourable and advocating the human rights which are the basic rights that must be provided to every individual irrespective of their caste, community and any other such factor which can lead to any discrimination in the implementation of this agenda.

This concept of descent work is effective and approachable to have a just and fair society as deduced by many researchers in various researches. There are various analysis and researches done by various researchers to look into effectiveness concerning just and fair society. Greenhaus and Allen (2014) found that the impact of work-life balance which includes the interdependence relation between the personal life, work and family eventually lead to a reduction of the stress and providing synergy to the individual. As per Cohen and Cole (2014), the idea of decent work is crucial and a fundamental goal which will ultimately lead to the promotion of fair policies and they also considered the fact that the modification and improvement in the global policy over the work done in the United Nation agency have been carried out by the International labour organisation. The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) also universalise the concept of decent work developed by the International Labour Organisation convention with respect to the rights of human rights for all. The CESCR advocated strongly that the right to have the fair and favourable condition of work is a right which must be available to every person without the discrimination or distinction of any kind adopted. They even advocated the interdependency of the rights of work which includes the right to freely chosen work, the right to have social security and safe working conditions along with trade union rights.

The analysis of the decent work agenda launch bye International labour organisations and the various researches and observation of the researchers provides that the role of decent work and the application of decent work in a society is likely to enhance the possibility of developing a just and fair society where all the individuals have a right to access work with good working conditions along with pay without discrimination. The attributes of decent work do not only alleviate the monetary crisis of the individual but also provide relief on the psychological front which eventually will build a better society.
