IOT Simulations with Cisco Packet Tracer

Proposed Activity – Aims, Objectives, Research Question(s), and State how It Is Novel

Aims

Design and implementation of Wi-FI based network for modern home’s architecture by using Cisco packet tracer.

Objectives

  • Analyze various network topologies by designing the network using Cisco packet tracer
  • Find out the Limitation of the existing network
  • How to achieve an efficient network topology based on the existing hardware and software by replacing only fewer equipment.

Research questions

  • The main question in designing a new network topology is how to make the topology efficient using the existing inventories like network equipment, computer hardware, and available software.
  • After getting all the information about hardware and software next is to collect what are the problems faced by the users to identify the overall problem.
  • The next step is to analyze how to design a new network topology which assures efficiency while replacing only fewer equipment.

A network is a combination of different hardware and software for communication between devices. The evaluation of the simulation of this network should show that it overcomes all the difficulties in the previous configurations while enhancing the speed, flexibility, and security of the network.

Methodology – Rationale, Data Selection and Collection, Recruitment, Participant Demographics, Analytical Process

Methodology In this work, we apply literature as well as experimental study methods to analyze the shortcoming of the existing network topologies. The experimental study can be done using simulation software like Cisco packet tracer and analyze the efficiency of different networks. While the literature study is obtained from the journal, articles, websites, books, eBook, etc. The work aims to develop a Wi-Fi network to make a smart IoT based home. The design and configuration of the model apply testing to each subsystem in the network and finally test the overall system to find out the efficiency of the network. The purpose of the Wi-Fi-based home network is to control various home-based appliances through a smartphone. The home gateway in the design is used to connect multiple devices to connect and assign an address to each of the devices (Sihombing, et al., 2018). This allows a smartphone to control and monitor all IoT based home equipment. Data Selection and Collection Data selection and collection did mainly through the research. According to (Honnia & Andry, 2016) many organizations in the public and private sector started to deploy computers to employees so that they can work efficiently. One of the problems faced by them is the network design in the organization is poor. The method to overcome this is using Cisco's Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN). VLAN has many advantages like enhanced security and flexibility of the network. This also reduces the authentication problems faced by the network. VLAN connections are software-defined no physical connection exists between devices. Before VLAN the connections are done through a physical connection and have a single broadcast domain. This reduces security because some files are reaching at the unwanted receivers. Also if the broadcast is not enough to carry the data it will lead to network collision. VLAN is a technic in which devices are connected virtually suitable for home, organizations, and universities. It is a data link layer technology that connects various devices logically to a physical network. This allows the network to tear down into smaller segments and has better security and performance. In (Cisco, 2020) the design of LAN and Wireless Lan (WLAN) with different configuration is given. The advantage of WLAN is the control of IoT devices, internet access to guests then data and voice service to employees. The day to day network connections are increasing which makes the organizations think about switching to WLAN. Cisco WLAN has better performance to the latest Wi-Fi (802.11ax) in terms of control of IoT devices and cloud-based controls. Cisco WLANs are secure and highly reliable which provides better WLAN experience to all users. The Main design models of Cisco has a Centralized design, Centralized design with branches, Software Defined(SD) model.

The centralized model is suitable for large sites while the FlexConeect model is good for small networks to connect a centralized one. So for a home-based design, either Cisco SD-access or Cisco Catalyst 9800 model can be employed. According to (Finardi, A, 2018) the materials and models of the Packet tracer design of WLANs include four methods. The first method is Requirements collection. Several simple experimental designs have to be done before making the final requirements. The simple designs should be easy to simulate but enough to meet future requirements. This method allows the designer to pre-define the requirements for the entire system. Another design challenge is to choose the Cisco packet tracer as the simulation tool. Even with its shortcomings packet tracer is one of the major network simulators using today. Packet tracer integrates enough resources to design home-based WLAN. Now Cisco version 7.3 is available as a free tool for designing a home-based network. Next is to simulate the IoT devices in packet tracer. As specified earlier this is done initially as a practice to develop complicated network structure. Finally, the feedback of test users is collected to make the design more efficient and secure.

The SD access control method shown above can be modified to suit the home-based Wi-Fi network. Analytical process Here I propose to design a home Wi-Fi network with a Cisco packet tracer. Different topologies are going to simulate based on various parameters. The topology is chosen based on the efficiency, flexibility, security, and reliability of the model. A modified Cisco SD access model topology is proposed here for the home-based Wi fi model. Various tests are conducted on network models. A host to Host testing is done by sending a packet using a tracer from the source to the destination IP address. There is a successful result if communication happens between source and destination. Similarly, routing functionality is tested by sending a packet from a tracer to a router IP. To verify the security using a firewall we sent a packet from one interface to another. The packet tracer shows what happens to the packet in each section of the network along with the speed of the packet. Load testing is also carried out to check the stability of memory. Stress testing is also done to find out the error of the system and how well the system recovers itself. According to (Honnia & Andry, 2016) the VLAN topology works well without switches and also helps to add more devices than LAN. The security test is done through broadcasting and checked whether it can be accessed by an outside user.
