Building an Individual Research Plan

Introduction:

This reflection essay outlines the concept of the interpersonal communication that explored during the course work. The objective of writing this essay is to summarize what I have learned from the unit and how my learning can be applied in the future career goals. The course provided me an opportunity to learn about the concept of interpersonal communication and develop those skills in me as well by gaining theoretical as well as practical knowledge. The interpersonal skills are developed in classroom by participating in the public speaking sessions that held during this coursework. It was a great learning experience for me where I understand the importance of the interpersonal communication in the business and also gain knowledge about the effective business communication along with the verbal and non verbal communication that taking place during the ten weeks in my coursework. This refection is an evaluation of the two topics out of ten concepts that I chose and those topics are the oral communication and interpersonal communication. The critical analysis of these topics is also done to understand the implications that it will have in my personal and professional life. I will also highlight more ideas and thoughts with regard to topic by exploring the literature and theories that written on these concepts by the various scholars and researchers (Mendoza, 2015).

Section 1: Importance of communication concepts

Week 1: Communication purpose

I have learnt so many basic things about communication in the first week of my course as it highlights the purpose of communications, models and theories of communication. Every concept introduced by the researchers has some purpose always. The purpose of the communication is to identify the goals, social goals and instrumental goals. The general purpose of communication is to inform, persuade or entertain the messages to the other person.  The specific purpose of communication is about the type of message that an individual want to convey to the other individuals.  It is very important to understand the purpose of communication to make it more effective (Adigwe & Okoro, 2016).

Week 2: Listening: Listening is the important part or element of the communication. The development of active listening skills also helped in improving the oral communication skills in an individual as it allows a quick relay of the information and demonstrates the intentions of the person who is speaking. Because of this reason I also worked on my listening skills to enhance communication skills.

Week 3: Business writing: Business writing is the written form of communication. Many organizations make use of the reports, memos, reports, emails and newsletters to convey a specific message to the individual. This communication in writing is important to provide information to the larger number of people and facilitate the decision making processes, coordinate activities, manage personnel and demonstration of the abilities and skills (Leung, 2016).

Week 4: Academic writing: This is different from the business writing as this written communication takes place at the educational institutions. This concept is important to demonstrate the knowledge and skills of the students.

Week 5: Writing literature review: A literature review is the study of the previous researches and already known facts. Writing a literature review is important to serve the purpose of demonstrating the knowledge of what already being known by the person and it also helps in the justifying the choice of research.

Week 6: Speaking: Speaking is an act of making vocal sounds and covey a message in a better way through words and usage of proper language. The speaking is important for the effective business communication as it allows forming the connections, influencing the decisions and motivating the change (Pope, 2015).

Week 7: Intercultural communication: Culture also influenced the communication in many ways like greeting an individual, interacting with person, food, fashion and all these factors are highly dependent on the culture of the city or state. The intercultural communication becomes a part of our life inadvertently is there are so many differences in the attitudes, beliefs and values systems of the people which give rise to various intercultural differences and the difference in our styles of communication (Maine University, 2015).

Week 8: Communication media choices: Media is defined as the mode of communication with the help of which a message can be delivered to the individual. The message can be conveyed through numeric, spoken language and written language. The use of images, text, audio, video and face to face communication is the part of the communication. The selection of the best media is helpful in making the communication more effective.

Week 9: Group development: The concept of group development involves four different stages: forming, storming, norming and performing. This concept is important as it helps in achieving the objectives of the organizations as the formation or development of group allows the individuals to put their efforts to work in a team. Communication is important to develop the successful groups and team in the organization.

Week 10: Interpersonal communication: Interpersonal communication style of a person is dependent on various factors and determines the behavior of the individual in different ways (Adigwe & Okoro, 2016). There are three main factors that help in determining the human behavior including cognitive which are also known as personal factors, environmental factors and behavior factors. Before improving the interpersonal communication skills it's very important to understand as they help in determining human behavior. Interpersonal communication is also playing a very important role as we live in a global village travelling from one place to another place for business and education purposes. Interpersonal communication plays important role in communicating with the people from different cultural backgrounds. Interpersonal communication is a unique and it involves various communication styles like assertive, aggressive, passive and passive aggressive.

Section 2: Literature review

Moving ahead, a culture is defined as a set of values and traditions and beliefs that have accumulated over a period of time. Culture also influenced the communication in many ways like greeting an individual, interacting with person, food, fashion and all these factors are highly dependent on the culture of the city or state. According to the Iceberg model of culture, what is visible to the people includes the tangible expressions and behavior whereas the attitudes beliefs, values and behavior of an individual all invisible to other people and lie under the water (Leung, 2016).

The onion model represents culture as a set of layers that are each field of to reveal the underlying basic assumptions behind it and the outer layers for the culture are generally the behaviour, rituals, symbols while the beliefs, attitude and the values of the people form the inner layers of it.

The intercultural communication becomes a part of our life inadvertently is there are so many differences in the attitudes, beliefs and values systems of the people which give rise to various intercultural differences and the difference in our styles of communication.

I found out that when two people having clearly distinct cultures began to communicate with each other, the conversation, their relationship and the process of communication between them goes through the following four phases. The first phase is that when the relationship is being developed among the people. At this time, we generally tend to avoid any insensitive remarks and do not freely Express in tolerance for the values or the behaviour of the people belonging to the different culture. At this stage we respect the differences and let the people enjoy their natural culture without being very judgmental or expressive of our differences. This is followed by the second phase where the exchange of information takes place. At this stage, people begin sharing the information about the topics and the cultural differences which helps in generating trust and is a strategic and practice adopted by the people for getting information from the other members and to clarify any doubts or ideas regarding their culture or cultural beliefs (Weissman, 2014). The third stage in the intercultural communication is a recognition of the multicultural communication techniques being followed by the people. This is the stage where maximum conflicts take place as the discussions continue and the people become more familiar with each other. With the increasing familiarity, people also become more expressive of their differences and intolerance of the style of communication and beliefs of the people belonging to the other culture. With thoughtful consideration and understanding of the differences among the people, people can easily navigate through this stage to reach the force and the final stage where the people understand and embrace the differences and try to achieve agreement by forming informal relationships. The style of Communication of the people belonging to one culture is very different when compared to the communication style of the people belonging to some other culture. But these differences make us unique (Pope, 2015).

Section 3

After undertaking this course and analysis of all the communication concepts, I have analyzed the role of the interpersonal communication in personal and professional life. The understanding with regard to the determination of the human behavior and personality traits allows me to succeed in social, educational and professional environment.  In the organizations, the intercultural communication helps in coordinating the individuals from different cultural backgrounds and interpersonal communication skills helps in analyzing the behavior and personality type of the other individuals. These two concepts that I have chosen for this reflective essay will help me to achieve my future career goals.  I wish to start my own business venture internationally after 5 or 10 years and contribute towards the economic growth. To achieve these career goals, it is very important to have the effective communication skills because only then I will be able to interact with the people from different countries, different personality types and different cultural backgrounds. The speaking skills and interpersonal communication skills brings confidence in an individual to speak and share their viewpoints openly and clearly (Ngong, 2014). The effective communication also results in team work as when we worked in teams we all used to communicate face to face and to share the information, ideas, opinions and thoughts. The oral communication and interpersonal communication are very effective because it ensures the clarity of ideas, completeness and correct communication. All these theoretical concepts and my knowledge will help me to achieve my career goals and this reflection also motivates me to work on my weaknesses and enhance my communication skills (Ames, Maissen, & Brockner, 2012).

Conclusion

Therefore, there were two main topics that we have discussed including oral communication and interpersonal communication. The critical analysis of these topics is also done to understand the implications that it will have in my personal and professional life. It was a great learning experience for me where I understand the importance of the interpersonal communication in the business and also gain knowledge about the effective business communication along with the verbal and non-verbal communication that taking place during the ten weeks in my coursework. I also highlighted more ideas and thoughts with regard to topic by exploring the literature and theories that written on these concepts by the various scholars and researchers. The communication theories are used to understand and systematically summarize the nature of the entire communication process. There are a number of theories that have been experimented with, and adopted, by studying the requirements and the agenda for communication. This report ends with the application of communication concepts for future career aspirations and how these topics will help in enhancing my skills for future goals.
