Nursing Professional Identity

Professional identity is considered to be one of the important aspects of the professional that help in decision making which directly improve the working procedure. Professional identity is considered to the individual perspective regarding their professional roles that are influenced by the different belief, value, and attitude of the individual (Browne et al., 2018). The personal values of the nurses directly impact the professional identity of the individual. The different personal value of the nurses includes professional competency, independence, equality and autonomy which directly influence nurse’s professional working practice (Hadid et al., 2019). The essay is going to discuss the about professional identity and personal value and how they are related to the nursing profession. The essay will help the strategy that can be used to develop a professional identity and how it will be linked to the personal value in nursing.

Individual aspect and profession requirement need to be complied to work in the collaboration which leads with positive professional results. Professional identity in health care professional is expected to develop according to how surrounding effect the individual belief. The socialization is considered to be the complex phenomena which indicate how the surrounding exposure is going to impact the professional behaviour of the individual that leads to the formation of professional identity. Professional identity is linked with the activities or behaviour that are related to profession and expectation from the individual regarding his/her role in a particular profession. Interprofessional education is considered to be one of the important aspects that strength the professional identity but proper guidance and recommendation is required to develop a professional identity. The development of the professional identity is not a multifaceted aspect but it requires collaborative efforts of the interprofessional education and practice that lead to positive professional identity (Joynes 2018). The professional identity is considered to be the individualized practice in the profession that is affected by the experience of the individual.

The development of the professional identity helps the individual to share a common approach regarding work within a particular work community. The professional identity of the individual is considered to develop through a socialization process that includes utilizing different aspect to develop the professional identity like discipline-based theory, practical skills, reflective knowledge and analytical thinking. The framework that leads to the development of the professional identity includes three steps that initiate with the programmatic process which is the understanding gained from the coursework. The second aspect includes relationships between colleagues, seniors and professionals and the last aspect includes the individualized belief that finally shapes the professional identity (Moussa& Dafri, 2018).

Nursing identity is considered to be the combination of the professional and self-identity that help them to work according to the situation. The professional identities of the nurses are developed by the cumulative efforts of the work context, education, work values, peer activities and social values. The nurses acquire their professional identity through a complex and multifaceted process that is called professional socialisation and positive professional identity help to improve nursing retention. The health care quality can be measured by the professional identity of the health care professional and nursing identity is directly related to the improved quality of care. The nursing identity helps the nurses to expand their leadership role skill that leads to improved quality of care. Professional identity in nursing is directly linked to the patient-centred care as it helps the nurses to form a relationship with the client by showing empathy and utilizing professional connection (Bell et al., 2015).

There are different factor directly affect the professional identity of the nurses and their direct effect is responsible to shape the individual nurse professional identity. The first factors that directly affect professional identity include coping up with the role and responsibility as a nurse. Another factor includes following policy and procedure that help to frame the professional identity and maintaining autonomy is also one of the factors that aim to shape the professional identity of the nurses. The professional identity of the nurses also affected by fulfilling the nursing quality and maintaining patient right is also one of the factors that share the professional identity of the nurses. The nurses are expected to work in collaboration to develop a new skill and increase understanding toward different issue faced by the patient. The team works and reflective learning helps the nurses to reframe the professional identity that helps them to improve the working practises (Moola, 2017).

The development of the professional identity in the individual is characterized by the three stages that lead to the foundation of the professional identity formation. The first stage of the professional identity formation includes early foundational education that includes early learning, understanding social roles and rules, understanding different perspective or viewpoint of individuals. The next stage includes training and supervised practice that directly related to the medical practice through multiple perspective, subordinates and self-interest and commitment toward the profession. The last stage includes practising the profession that includes understating different values and belief of the individual, reflective learning and reconstruct the frame according to the current situation (Barone et al ., 2019).

In nursing, many factors contribute to the professional identity development and they are expected to work according to the professional rules as their carelessness can lead to complication. The first factor that helps to develop the professional identity is the clinical placement as nurses can observe their senior develop professional identity because positive role model increases the learning of the individual that leads to improved skill, knowledge and belief according to the profession. Positive clinical supervisors are also one of the factors that help the nurses to increase the learning outcome of the student and support them in professional identity development. The clinical learning environment also plays one of the major roles in the development of professional identity and effective communication with a mentor can help eh nurses to reframe professional identity. Work ethics during the clinical practise also positively affect the nurses which help them to respect for human dignity and increase their understanding toward nursing ethics. The different clinical placement aspect can affect the nurses positively or negatively it all depends upon the behaviour of the mentor and senior staff. Clinical placement plays a major role in the development of the professional identity in the nursing profession and provides them with the chance to improve the skill according to the demand of the profession (De Swardt et al., 2017).

Personal value is considered to lay down the foundation for the development of the professional identity and individual belief; values ultimately shape the professional identity. The personal value plays a major role in clinical decisions and they become interlinked with professional values of the individual to form a professional identity. The personal value with experience helps in the development of professional identity and there is a different factor that directly helps to develop by the help of personal value which leads to a positive professional result. These positive professional value that leads to the development of the professional identity include accountability, professional duty, social responsibility, excellence, compassion and altruism. The personal belief, value and personal experience lay the foundation of the professional identity but a reframing of the professional identity occur in accordance to the need of profession (McGinnis et al., 2016). Moreover, the article presented by Moyo et al., (2015) in the nursing profession both personal and professional values are interlinked and they directly influence the clinical decision of the individual. Personal values directly involved in the behaviour of the health care professional concerning the different situation and professional identity formed by the values guide the individual to respond in respect of the issue. The personal values are developed early in life and they are influenced by the family, education, community, behaviour and values of the individual.

Professional values are developed in the later stage of life that directly from the professional identity and it is directly affected by the personal value of the individual. The personal and professional values are interlinked that collaboratively lead to the development of the professional identity but sometime personal-professional conflict leads to the confusion it the clinical decision. Schwartz’s value model that helps to integrate the personal and professional values of the individual in health care. This model identified the ten broad values that include all the important aspect that is to be included in the decision making that covers both personal and professional value.

Professional identity is developed by analysing surrounding environment and experience of the individual. There are the different factor that directly influences the individual professional identity like roles and responsibility following the policy of the organization and patient preferences. The professional identity in nursing is considered an important aspect that helps to fulfil the profession requirement and many factors lead to the development of the nursing professional identity. The personal value of the individual has a greater impact over the professional identity and personal value in combination with professional value lead to the foundation of professional identity.
