Workplace Learning Contract

Introduction

The primary focus of this subject is on preparing students to advance roles in nursing practice in a given sense of clinical, chronic and complex nursing. The subject allows students to engage in critical thought, reflection, and scholarship about their work environments and nursing practice (Institute of Medicine (US), 2011). Throughout the session students engage in a partnership of mentoring and supervision to promote the progress of clinical practice by submitting a learning contract.

The Registration Standards for RN by the NMBA were identified and the areas where I could increase my expertise, compliance, and skill can be worked upon to grow in the clinical area (Nursery and Midwifery Board, 2017). I want to focus on establishing two learning goals that will help me push my practice forward. In this learning contract, the specific standard which direct my aims are as follows:

  1. To develop effective professional communication skills

As an RN, it should be a discipline focused on successful clinical and professional partnerships for being actively engaged. There should also be mutual trust and respect along with the generosity in professional relationships.

  1. Providing quality nursing practice.

The quality and compassionate care can heal many serious health problems. All of which depends on a thorough and systematic evaluation, and are the best evidence available for achieving expected and approved outcomes. The RN can help the health seeker to achieve quality services.

I wanted to discuss and try to incorporate two of these objectives into my Workplace Learning Contract from the incentives presented in this session.

These two opportunities include:

  1. I will create, sustain and end relationships in such a way as to discern the boundaries between professional and personal ties. This can be achieved by communicating effectively, respect the dignity, community, traditions, beliefs, and rights of every individual. It is often difficult for people to come to a decision on their health-related problems. So, my duty through this opportunity will be to direct such people to resources and to find the solution of health-related doubts. This nursing standard will also help me value the dignity and legal capacity of the patient. The safety culture and learning always will be encouraged by me. A regular interaction with doctors and nursing staff will help in exchanging information and experience that promotes person-centred care. I will also be involved in and/or directing group activity and track notifiable actions by health practitioners, health workers, and others (Bramley & Matiti, 2014).

  2. I will use this as an opportunity to provide detailed, secure, quality practice for people's nursing needs and will practise within the framework of the profession. I will also provide appropriate timely guidance and supervision to ensure the security and correctness of assigned medical care. This standard will make me liable to operate in compliance with and in accordance with applicable rules, protocols, requirements, regulations, and legislation (Balogh, Miller & Ball, 2015).

Section: 2

I am comfortable with developing a nursing plan for patients. I use the data from the patient assessment to make an individual plan. The plan is always to construct a program in collaboration with other health care providers. According to the plan the practice will be evaluated and the time frame of engagement is negotiated. This helps me in coordinating the resources effectively and efficiently for the planned action of care for the patient. I am able to manage my professional activity very well and efficiently if things are planned. I always have received a positive outcome in terms of improvement in patient's health without any delays in medical procedures.

The two nursing standards where I found a need for improvement are in the development of good professional relationships and providing safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice. As far as communication in the professional system is required, I can efficiently communicate at the nursing level by providing instructions and care plans. But at the higher level I feel hesitant to communicate with the doctors and surgeon. Also, I feel that I am competent enough to provide good care for people of my communities and cultural beliefs. I certainly have a problem in dealing with people of different beliefs like aboriginals.

After halfway session with the help of my mentor have overcome my problems up to a certain level. My confidence and competence have developed from the significant input from my mentor. The reflections have ensured that I fell valued as an individual and as a professional in the team. And this help me to communicate and convey my ideas to the senior doctors and surgeons. Providing safe, appropriate, and responsive quality nursing practice still needs further development from my side as I have to understand the local culture and beliefs of the communities and other communities like CALD, aboriginals, and refugees. My confidence in discussing the health problems and care plan of patients with senior doctors have made me look as an important asset for the team as well as I have become a person whom the team can rely more than previous.

The scope of nursing practice is the range of roles, functions, responsibilities, and activities in which a registered nurse is educated, competent, and has the authority to perform. After this session I feel that I can make decisions about practice; by taking care of the patient's needs and overall benefit, and the importance of promoting and maintaining the highest quality standards in health services. There as to be a mutual respect for individuals without any discrimination on grounds of religion, gender, age, or anything. Learning the principles will help me develop a meaningful relationship with the patient that is focused on open communication, honesty, empathy, compassion, and kindness, and will serve to motivate the patient to make positive decisions.
