Campus Network DNS Services

DNS services are the services that run the Domain name System. The DNS services are considered to provide multiple servers in a specific geographical location where users may be spread in a vast area (Incognito Software, 2007). When DNS nodes are closer to the end-user, they provide a faster web address resolution speed. There are various DNS services that are typically available in a campus network. In this respect the following DNS services that are available to a campus network

OIT DNS service - the OIT DNS service is one of the DNS service hats is used in various campus networks. The service, the clients are attached through a wireless service that is provided by the OIT (Incognito Software, 2007).
Advertisement blocking- this is another vital DNS service that is typically used in a campus network. The service provides content filtration on all the networks that are present in a campus network setting. This DNS service is highly important to restrict access to certain kinds of advertisements on a campus network.

URL typo correction - the URL typo correction is one of the commonly used DNS services that provide a correction of wrongly typed words. The URL typo thus provides various network users in a campus network setting with the benefit where the wrongly typed words get corrected automatically. For instance, if one types Goggle, the DNS server will automatically correct it to Google (Incognito Software, 2007).
Content filtering- in a campus network, the DNS service of content filtration is very significant. This is because this DNS service blocks adult sites and any other unwanted content that is shown to the user. This service does not make use of any kind of software on devices or computers to block content and therefore provides security on a campus network (Incognito Software, 2007).

Phishing blocking - this DNS service blocks the sites that contain scams, viruses, and any other form of dangerous content that can harm the user of the device (Incognito Software, 2007). It protects the system network and the user from malware and promotes a healthy network system on campus.
Role of root servers
Root servers are considered to be an integral part of the supporting infrastructure of the Internet. The root server facilitates the use of the Internet by acting as the backbone of online access. It is a crucial part of the domain name system and the root zone file is considered to be responsible for publishing content that promotes DNS functionality. The following are some of the roles of root servers

Support Internet infrastructure - Root servers are responsible for supporting the whole infrastructure of the Internet. They act as the main backbone as they facilitate access to various online resources and websites (Incognito Software, 2007).
Locate service address- root servers are responsible for locating the service address. They are the main component of DNS and are a vital component for name resolution that is a part of DNS.

Helps in the identification of an IP address - the root server helps in the identification of an IP address. Such identification enables the understanding of root server mechanics. The unique numeric IP address that is connected to a domain is identified and further processed in order to access a website (Incognito Software, 2007).
Translates hostnames- another key role played by a root server is the translation of human-readable hostnames into IP addresses. This facilitates the communication between various Internet hosts and also directs the answer requests in root zones where it returns a list of authoritative name servers.
