Developing Teamwork at Workplace - Part A

The first identified effective interprofessional teamwork is when Nurse Katie panicked about the patient’s condition she didn’t hesitate to ask for help and immediately called Monica, her colleague this clearly showed the effective communication and interprofessional teamwork between the nurses. It has been reportedly seen that the team members must be optimistic in order to ask questions, share their ideas or any concerns without any hesitation with each other. They must discuss the potential solutions of the arising conflicts (Van der Haar et al., 2017). Each team member's potency and skills should be utilized for achieving the desired patient care experience as well as the workplace satisfaction (Charlotte, 2017). This is considered as the foundation of the effective teamwork. The way Katie immediately called Monica showed the same.

The another identification was of the ineffective interprofessional communication by Katie when she was totally looking confused and was not sure about patient’s vitals. She was communicating with the other nurses with totally running out of confidence that too in front of the patient which is not a good sign. It is very necessary to show confidence at each stage of nursing practice even while communicating with the colleagues. According to Hardavella et al., (2017) a person who lacks in confidence while communicating depicts the difficulty in being assertive, shyness, or lack of awareness regarding the patient that negatively impacts the relationship.

The next identified effective teamwork that was by Monica’s way of helping Katie. Monica knew that Katie is new, she is a student nurse so,the way Monica handled everything showed effective teamwork by her. From helping out in getting everything to helping in doing the assessment showed the great sense of responsibility and an effective communication as well as teamwork by Monica. If one nurse is proficient in some work or is experienced then, helping the colleague with their strengths in order to achieve the patient’s safety and the way the scenario at that time depicted the shared understanding of patient goals is considered as effective teamwork (Walton et al., 2020).

Lastly, the identified ineffective interprofessional teamwork was shown when Monica bought the new intravenous and Katie was explaining it to the patient, Kellie didn’t let her complete and started asking the other things. The interprofessional collaboration between the nurses and the effective teamwork between the nurses as well as the physicians is important in order to improve the patient outcomes as well as in the provision of quality of health services. This includes letting the person speak what he/she feels which is the right of a person. However, by cutting in between Kellie showed an ineffective way of teamwork (Elsous et al., 2017).

The effective or ineffective communication and teamwork can impact on patients positively and negatively respectively. While delivering the health care services, an effective teamwork and effective communication both can instantaneously as well as positively affect the patient safety and his health outcome (Will, Johnson & Lamb, 2019). When the healthcare professionals work together in a collaborative way by being a single team effectively then, their collaborative teamwork can result in improving the patient safety. Patient safety experts agree that communication and teamwork skills are essential for providing quality health care (Freytag et al., 2017). When the staff members collaborate with each other effectively during the provision of health care services, they can potentially contribute in improving patient’s health outcomes, preventing the potential medical errors, improving the efficiency, and increasing the patient’s satisfaction. The healthcare teams that work collaboratively and use effective communication can potentially diminish the chances of error, by this the patient safety will be enhanced along with obtaining the appropriate and best clinical performance. The health care services that are based on the effective working of the team members provide the health services to not only the patients but, also their families in order to achieve the shared goals within as well as across the clinical settings. This helps in achieving the coordinated and high-quality care (Will, Johnson & Lamb, 2019). The integration of the shared responsibilities with the liability among the team members of the health care systems can result in offering great benefit. However, in contradiction, If the shared responsibilities with ineffective teamwork without the high-quality teamwork occurs then, it can result in creating instant risks for the patients. For an instance, ineffective communication between the healthcare providers, patients, their family members, and caregivers has been emerged as the most common reason for taking the legal actions alongside the health-care providers. While, on the other hand, the effective team work and communication requires the members of the team. This does not only include the effective communication with the patient only but also communicating with each other. The Effective communication and collaborative working of the team member is considered as one of the most important aspect for the success of the teamwork. The team focuses on prioritizing the effective communication and teamwork continuously improves the overall behavior of the patient (Buljac-Samardzic, Doekhie& van Wijngaarden, 2020).

Not only just patients but, they can have a major impact on the staff members. As everyone knows that two heads are better than one. Similarly, working together effectively is better than working solely. An effective teamwork will help in managing the complex work easily by breaking it into tasks and handing over the components of the work to the each team member. However, across the industries, there is a propensity for emphasizing the division of labor and neglecting the mechanisms of working in coordination with integration (Sanyal & Hisam, 2018). While, in the field of Health care delivery working in a collaborative manner is inherently inter-reliant and gradually more complex. It has been seen that with effective communication and teamwork, the staff member fosters their creativity and learning. Brainstorming ways to achieve the optimal patient results comes while working in a group and not while working solely. The staff members will learn from each other’s individual experiences. Thus, effective teamwork and communication also helps in maximizing the shared knowledge at the workplace. The staff members will be able to learn new skills (McEwan et al., 2017). Working together with effective teamwork and communication lets the staff members construct the talents and the potential of the teammates. The staff members will be able to learn conflict resolution skills. Conflicts inexorably occur when a group of unique individuals are asked to work together. Not every staff member come from the same background and has same working styles and habits and this uniqueness in the viewpoints of the varied staff members may generate conflict but, if they are working in an effective manner then, it will help in developing conflict resolving skills in them along with helping in creating the most successful work (Sanyal & Hisam, 2018).

This was all about the patient and the staff members, but effective and ineffective teamwork and communication can also make an impact on the healthcare organization itself. This can be explained as ineffective teamwork and communication at workplace may also result in creating job dissatisfaction among the staff members. Unsatisfied staff will eventually result in higher nurse turnover that can be a great loss to the healthcare organization. It has been evidently proved that 42% of nurses that are unsatisfied at their workplace and their jobs have left the organization within the initial 12 months of their joining as compare with the 11% of the nurses that were satisfied with their job (Alghamdi & Bach, 2018). A team’s flexibility to transform is based on the foundation of the effective teamwork and communication. An effective teamwork and communication can be built when the nurse administrators also include the staff members in important discussions as well as in the decision making processes in order to develop trust in them that will definitely affect their workflow positively. Accountability as well as the ongoing evaluation of the changes in the workflow will help in ensuring the staff satisfaction that will result in enhancing the patient outcomes. This will eventually result in better organizational outcomes. Not only this but, when the staff members work well together, it results in improving the productivity of the organization. Along with the productivity it will also help in increasing the morale as well as the overall quality of services of the healthcare organization. In an effective teamwork the staff members become able to understand the organizational aims of that particular organization; either they are its long-term or short-term strategies. This is where the effective teamwork benefits the organization by working together in order to achieve the common goals of the organization while impending their daily tasks and responsibilities. This result in creating a strong team dynamic that helps in supporting the health care organization. This drives each member of the team to work in even more effective as well as in more productive manner than each of the individual could have ever worked alone. While, the ineffective teamwork could potentially threaten the organizational performance (McEwan et al., 2017).
