Leadership and management are widely different from each other as they play an integral part in the development and the function of any firm. The primary difference between leadership and management is that leaders do not essentiallygrasp or conquer a management position. However, the leader does not have to be an authority character in the association; a leader can be anyone who can fulfillthe roles and the responsibility very well. Leadership refers to the quality of influencing team members so that the objectives are accomplished willingly and enthusiastically(Mendenhall, et al., 2017). Leadership is the skill which helps to lead people in the right direction. It is not a lesson which could be achieved by every member. However, it is considered as the quality which is attained by only a few members. On the other hand, management is considered as the art of systematically arranging and coordinating things efficiently and effectively.
It is emphasis on controlling and managing activities in the system. Management process is comprised of five-element and it includes planning, organizing, staffing, leading, directing, controlling and coordinating. These elements should be involved in the firm in order to accomplish all the predefined goals of the organization. It is the technique used by the members of the organization in order to manage the function of the organization in the most effective and efficient way. Managers of the organization play an imperative role in managing the development of the organization. The manager of theorganization is responsible for the working and coordination of organization activity by controlling all the process in the organization. They need to apply policy and procedure in the organization in order to drive smooth working in the organization.
Managers’ area responsible to recruit candidates in the organization and leaders needs to guide them the right path for understanding the organization working(Kim, Kim, Han, Jackson &Ployhart, 2017). The main difference between the leadership and the management is that the leadership is the skill and the management is the quality of ruling. Leadership aids the organization to add some changes and innovation in the working while management aids the organization to maintain stability. However, in the leadership guidelines and principle are established while in the case of management policies and procedure and implemented for the smooth running of the organization. These both are inseparable and if there is management then there is leadership as well.
Leadership styles areconsidered as the leaders’ behaviour towards the members of the team. The behavioral patterns reflect the role of the leaders towards its team. There are mainly four types of leadership style (Herman,2016). These are comprised of autocratic, democratic, transformational and paternalistic leadership style.
Autocratic leadership style is also known as authoritarian leadership. This is one of the leadership styles in which the individual form their decision without any interruption and input from other group members. All the decisions are made by their choices and judgement without any interference of any other group member of the organisation. This type of leadership style involves control and absolute over other members of the group(Howell & Davis, 2017). This kind of leadership style has various advantages as well as disadvantages.
This kind of leadership helps the organisation to take a final decision with the involvement of all the team members in the decision-making process. This kind of leadership style involves all the team members and their ideas, creativity and decision making skills for the better output(Walls &Berrone, 2017). As in this leadership style, the members are highly satisfied with the team leader and accomplish all the defined objectives of the organisation.
Transformational leadership style is the process through which leaders and their followers raise each other to higher levels of motivation and morality. This kind of leaders set a model of fairness and integrity in the organisation. The leader also encourages other members and provides appropriate recognition and support to the team members(Walls &Berrone, 2017). Leaders are also responsible for setting goals for the team members and supporting them in order to accomplish the define goals. In the business world, this kind of leadership style is mostly used in order to provide a work full environment to the employees so that they can achieve their targets and aids organisation to attain all its objectives.
Paternalistic leadership style comprisesof a dominant authority figure that acts as patriots entries, employees and partners as they are the part of extended family. In the return, the leaders expect trust as well as loyalty from the employees(Hoch, Bommer, Dulebohn, & Wu, 2018). This leadership is widely used in business in order to provide a familiar environment to the employees so that they can accomplish the defined goals of the organisation.
This study focuses on transformational leadership style which is really impactful in accomplishing goals within nursing practice. This is because in nursing practice nurses face unprecedented challenges as well as opportunities. This type of leadership practice motivates nurses by appealing to their bright ideas and moral values. It also motivates others to perform best and help others and create a supportive environment(Hoch, Bommer, Dulebohn, & Wu, 2018). This leadership style is very impactful in nursing practice as it has high and transparent application in nursing practice. Their applications are segmented into four components that
isidealized influence, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation and individual consideration. This leadership style creates a mentoring culture in the hospitals which help the patient to recover very soon. The role of nurses isvery important in hospital management and if the leaders follow this leadership style then it became easy for nurses to serve services without seeing their interest. In nursing practices management place a cardinal rule and the responsibility of the management is adding on the leaders of the organisation. Therefore, it is important for the organisation to have leaders that support the staff and encourage them to perform better by enhancing their skills and knowledge(Boamah, Laschinger, Wong & Clarke, 2018). However, there are various challenges faced by the nurses in hospital but leaders help them in order to face the challenges and help them to get comfortable with that environment and process accordingly.
There are various advantages as well as disadvantages of transformational leadership style. In terms of advantages, tranformational leadership tend to retain employees more often than any other leadership style. It is highly considered as the leadership which lowers the turnover cost of the organisation. It satisfies the needs and requirement of the organisation as well as their personal needs simultaneously. It easily creates and manages the changes in the organisation.Transformational leadership style had the leaders to get interacted with the team members and motivate them by adopting the changes within themselves. This style allows the leaders to reach out their whole potential.
On the other hand, in terms of disadvantages, the transformational leadership style can lead to developing negative outcomes. This leadership style is only being successful when continued communication is available between the members. Therefore proper communication must be maintained in order to have effective results in the organisation. However, it is also observed that transformational leaders need their followers to agree with them(Boamah, Laschinger, Wong & Clarke, 2018). Transformational leaders apply a charismatic approach to serve as a role model to their followers in the organisation. They guide others to accomplish goals and task with taking a risk.If the leader accepts risk then it is the entire responsibility of the leader to take effective actions. The necessary action taken by the leader then it became detrimental to the team and the organisation.
In the hospital management, the workplace is comprised of several responsibilities and roles. Therefore, transformational leadership style has the manager to focus on the big picture and aids the organisation to accomplish predefined goals. These leaders help the organisation to focus on big pictures that need improvisation and modernization. When the workplace is very large and big changes need to be undertaken then transformational leadership is a perfect choice for any organisation(Dong, Bartol, Zhang & Li, 2017). The transformational nurse manager focuses on the improvisation of patient care, better system and accessibility so they prefer to use transformational leadership style.
There are different qualities and the behaviour that contribute to the effectiveness of transformational leadership style. Transformational leaders improve the moral performance and encouragement of the employees. Transformational leadership knows that it is important to constantly attack the changing environment and keep moving forward. Leaders are very productive in adopting new approaches and ideas that have the organisation accomplish all the defined goals of the organisation. The qualities that involve in this leadership style by the leaders are adaptability, inspirational, proactive, leading with vision, keeping their ego beside etc. This leadership style not only helps the organisation to perform better but also help the employees to analyse the work of the leaders.
Transformational leaders keep their ego under control and do not take any decision that impacts on the team performance. They put their ego aside and put the organisation as their first priority(Buil, Martínez&Matute, 2019). They have excellent self-management and time management skills. Therefore this leadership style is very important in the field of nursing practices as it enhances the performance of nurses as well as the organisation. In nursing practice, there are various challenges faced by the nurses and the leaderare the only members that motivate and enhance the work of the nurses and provide them with an appropriate environment for working.
