Professional Standard in Nursing

When it comes to in-service careers professionalism is the key aspects that improve the professional practice of the individual. In the nursing profession, professional practice is considered to be important as there action directly reflect the picture for the health care services. Professional practice is considered to be a combination of individual values and belief with professional values that help to improve the working pattern. Nurses are expected to understand their professional role to improve professional practise and justify their responsibility as a nurse (Ghadirian et al., 2014). The professional practice model is framed to help the nurse in understanding and following the right professional practice to improve the quality of care. Different approaches have been discussed and should be included in the professional practice to help the patient in need that is the aim of the health care services. Some of the important professional practice skills are professional values, patient care delivery system, governance approach, the standard of practice, decision making (Dimitroff et al., 2016)

The evidence-based method is considered to be important in the nursing profession as it helps the nurse to understand new strategies in the care. The nurses can identify the gap in the knowledge concerning the evidence-based practise to improve professional practise and improve as a nurse. The evidence-based method helps the nurse to correlate the knowledge with the professional practise to improve the working pattern that will help to improve the care process. The nurses are expected to reduce the barriers in professional practice by identifying the gap that needs to be addressed to improve the professional role (Fiset et al., 2017). The majority of the nurses face issue in professional practice is due to the lack of clinical learning that is important to improve professional practice. Nurses face issue while utilizing their theoretical knowledge into the professional practice that directly hampers the quality of care. The theory-practical gap has been linked to the majority of the nurse as the incorporation of the theoretical knowledge in practice is not easy (Salifu et al., 2018).

The evidence-based practice is considered to be important in the nursing profession as it helps to identify the gap in professional practice. Evidence-based practise helps the nurses to reflect over their past professional practise and identify the gap in the practise that need to be improved in future professional practice. The different dimensions of the reflective practise include identifying the concept, correlating different perspective, understating context of use and using different dimension (Goulet et al., 2015).

I will try to improve my professional practice by utilizing reflective practise that is important to identify the gap and address it to improve the working pattern. During my clinical placement, I improved my professional practise skill by observing and understanding the importance of different methods that are important to incorporate as a nurse. The different quality that I have incorporated after the clinical practice includes cultural safe practise, therapeutic relationship and professional Standards.

Standard 1: The mental health nurse acknowledges diversity in culture, values and belief systems and ensures his/her practice is non-discriminatory and promotes dignity and self-determination.

This reflection is about one incident that helped me to understand the importance of the cultural competent care to improve quality of care. I was instructed to attend a patient recently admitted to the hospital facing issue due to poor health status and anxiety. After discussing it with my mentor I immediately rushed toward the emergency department to attend the patient. When I reached toward the patient she seems to be sacred and uncomfortable in the place. After analysing that she belongs to a different cultural belief I immediately utilized my cultural competent communication skills to improve her comfort. After the conversation, she was relaxed and comfortable that is important to start the treatment process concerning the health status of the patient. The patient is now cooperative with the treatment process that is important to provide patient-centric care.

This incident made me happy as I was able to decrease the discomfort of the patient by utilizing my cultural competent communication skills. This incident also made me dejected how the patient was feeling when she was not able to explain her issue and feeling uncomfortable due to different cultural belief. The incident helped to understand that cultural aspect in care plays an important role and thus nurse should be aware of cultural competency in the care.

The central role of the nurses in health care has increased the need to improve cultural competency in the care and provide quality care to the patient (Cai, 2016). The different cultural background related to the different belief and values that are appropriate concerning the cultural aspect. Health care workforces are expected to improve the cultural competency in the care to provide quality care to the patient. The action of the health care workforce directly impacts the patient health status thus cultural competent care is important to provide quality care (Jongen et al., 2018). The increasing diversity of the population has increased the interaction of the health care professional with a culturally diverse population. The cultural competency is a multifactorial aspect that includes cultural sensitivity, the right attitude, cultural awareness and cultural knowledge. The cultural competencies help the health care workforce to reduce the barriers that have been established due to the social and cultural aspect of the patient. The cultural competencies help the nurses to justify their role by improving their professional practice (Kaihlanen et al., 2019).

This incident has been an eye-opener to understand the importance of cultural competency in care. I will try to improve my cultural competency in care that will help to improve the patient interaction and participation that is necessary to provide quality care. I will attend a cultural competency workshop that will help me to improve my knowledge and professional practice in care (Handtke et al., 2019). I will also ensure that I will help my colleagues to understand the importance of cultural competency that will help them to improve the care process.

Standard 3: The Mental Health Nurse develops a therapeutic relationship that is respectful of the individual’s choices, experiences and circumstances. This involves building on strengths, holding hope and enhancing resilience to promote recovery.

I understood the importance of the therapeutic relationship with the patient after an incident in the care setting that is important to improve my future practice. The incident was when I was instructed to perform the ABCDE assessment to evaluate the patient health status that is necessary to identify the issue. When I informed the patient that I need to conduct the assessment he was reluctant toward the assessment. I was confused that how to convince him as it was important to identify the issue to start the treatment process. Then on the shift, my mentor traced me facing difficulty with the patient. Then he attended the patient for a while after which he was ready for the assessment and participated in the assessment to improve the identification of the issue. After this incident, I went to my mentor to discuss how he was able to convince the patient concerning the assessment process. He explained to me that during the care the foremost important thing includes rapport with the client to improve the care process. Therapeutic communication is important to improve the patient-nurse interaction and it improves the relationship with the client.

The incident was quite stressful as I was not able to justify my professional role that is important in the nursing profession. I was despondent that due to lack of my professional skills I was not able to provide quality care to the patient that is the main aim of the health care professionals. The interaction with my mentor had motivated me to improve my skills when it comes to therapeutic communication that is important for quality care. I was happy how my mentor helped me to understand the gap in my professional practice that need to be addressed to improve the working pattern concerning the care.

Therapeutic communication is considered to be an asset of the nurses as it helps them to easily explain the care procedure that will improve patient participation in the care. The cooperative relationship between nurse and patient is important to provide the patient-centric care that is important to decrease the recovery time of the patient (Živanović, D. & Ćirić, 2017). The nurses are expected to use their interpersonal skills to improve therapeutic communication by utilizing verbal and nonverbal communication method. There are the different aspect that is covered in the therapeutic communication like helping relationship, therapeutic alliance, purposeful relations and professional nurse-client relation (Kornhaber et al., 2016).

This incident has helped to identify the gap in my professional practice and I will try to improve my therapeutic communication skills that are important during patient care. I will try to use the evidence-based method to understand and correlated things concerning therapeutic communication. Evidence-based helps the nurse to update their professional practice skills concerning the care process that are necessary to provide quality care to the patient (Abdolrahimi et al., 2017).

Standard 8: The Mental Health Nurse’s practice incorporates and reflects common law requirements, relevant statutes and the nursing profession’s code of conduct and ethics. The Mental Health Nurse integrates international, national, local and state policies and guidelines with professional Standards and competencies.

When it comes to nursing profession ethics and practise standard play a central role this I got to know after a session I have attended during the orientation in my clinical placement. During the orientation, one of my senior explained that as a nurse we are aware of the standard and ethical principle due to our curriculum but we lack when it comes to practise it. My senior explained that because our action has a direct impact over the patient health thus it is very important to work concerning the ethical principle and standard of practice. After the orientation program when I discussed this with my mentor she explained that ethical principle and standards of practice help the nurses to work as per their professional role and decrease the chances of any legal complication. She also explains to me that sometimes as a nurse we get stuck between ethical principles but we have to follow the thing that is right for the patient.

This incident encouraged me to follow the different standard and ethical principle in the care to maintain the quality of care following professional practise. The session helped me to realise that being a nurse you are responsible for the patient health status thus you should maintain equity in the care. The standard and ethical principle will help me to justify my professional role and improve my working practise that aim to improve patient health status which is the main aim of health care.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board, (2017) framed professional standard for the nurses that are important to provide quality care to the patient. The professional help the nurses to work as per the guideline to improve the care procedure and maintain equity in the care procedure. There are three different aspects of the professional standard that includes code of ethics, standards of practise and code of conduct that is important to justify the professional role. The study presented by McDermott-Levy et al., (2018) describes that in nursing professional ethical principle consideration is important as it helps it ensures that nurses are working ethically. The different ethical principles are beneficence, justice, non-maleficence and autonomy these are important to provide quality care to the patient.

I will try to improve my knowledge concerning the different nursing standards that are necessary to improve my professional practice. In future practice, I will ensure that every action should be following the ethical principle to reduce the chances of ethical-legal complication. The professional standards and ethical principle will help to improve my understanding of nursing professional practise and I will be able to provide quality care as per my improved professional practise skills.
