Valuation Task 3: Evidence for Practice

Introduction

The study is inadequate on the application of mindfulness to reduce stress among university students (Greenhalgh et al., 2020). The paper will critically evaluate one of the few necessary research surveys on this topic (McConville, Lewis, Chambers, & Hassed, 2019). it is using a collection of questions to determine the strengths and weakness of main sections of the research survey, comprising: writing, study design, study methods, study questions, and finally results. Moreover, a framework facilitators and obstacles to the application of the inquiry training approvals and findings concerning a given scenario and clinical problem. In line with the set of questions, a compressive appraisal analysis that also touches the credibility of the author of the study will be available.

Part A – Critical Appraisal

Authorship

According to Academic Skills Unit [Australian Catholic University] (2016), a critical evaluation of a research study literature should entail an assessment of the credibility of writing, that may require, affiliations, cited credentials, and known expertise in the well-being discipline on the topic under research. The thesis of the research study under evaluation in this paper (McConville et al., 2019), consists of four scholars who were lecturers in the University of Latrobe University, Victoria, Australia and one had a diploma in Counseling, associated with the same university.

Due to this combination, it is hence ideal to conclude that the authorship was a strength of this study, regarding qualifications, cited sources, and affiliations. Conversely, noticeably, a weakness of this study is the omission of the exposure statement in the survey, revealing that there was an absence of conflict of interest. Academic Skills Unit [Australian Catholic University] (2016), defines a conflict of interest as a circumstance where there are viable, financial, lawful, or any other contrasting concern that may influence the research study.

Research questions & Justification

The research study (McConville et al., 2019) ought to determine whether practising mindfulness can help reduce stress amongst university students in Australia. The study has its Justification correctly stated; its location was accurate as it is found in the "introduction", hence strength of this study. On the other hand, most of the discussions in this paper are supported by studies that were published from 2004 to 2013, which go against the law of research that affirms promoting sources/literature should be five years from the year of publication.

The authors however draft four main points, being: most of the university student suffer from stress as a result of overthinking about small things, and they overthink own their own; practising mindfulness indeed reduces stress among the university students; some university students suffer from severe anxiety due to ignorance of the free advice to practice mindfulness, and lastly, university students have a negative perspective of the program they are undertaking hence experiencing stress about their future life. Therefore, the discussions within the introduction part is a strength, as it is well placed, accurately stated, and it demonstrates numerous dense viewpoint to sustenance the responsibility of this research.

Research Design

The author argues that they use a theme-based analytical research method, intending to induce theme rather than analyze those themes and data sets (McConville et al., 2019). Melnyk et al., (2019) define theme-based analytical research design as a qualitative approach, which uses semi-structured interviews and aims at determining themes that richly explains the lived experience of the university students during their time in school. The writers' choice of a qualitative approach for the study objective, concerning attain qualitative filed data, at a particular time in selected participants (i.e. scholar well-being professional students), which is also a strength of this paper. Conversely, the authors' shallow explanation of their reason for choosing their research design is a weakness of the study.

Research Methods

Under this section, the authors considered it ideal for including all details concerning participants' selection of the 40 students, which is strength to this study. The features included information like; what program the selected students are taking? What were there levels of education? The authors picked the names of the students from university record rather picking them randomly in the local university grounds. Besides, the study provides a high level of detailed information from the collection of data and data evaluation, with the writers utilizing primary expressive figures to review the sufficient findings together with the inclusion of substantial visual figures and tables to demonstrate the results. A weakness to this study is the omission of the measurement bias error approaches of collecting data as the writers cited they failed to follow ethical rules when doing the follow-up interviews to finalize their research education (McConville et al., 2019).

Results and Limitations

McConville et al., (2019) results conclude that practising mindfulness indeed reduces stress among the university students (McConville et al., 2019). Usually, the research study's findings should answer the research question or objective, meanwhile improving their conclusions with appropriate evidenced statistics (Hoffmann et al., 2017). McConville et al., (2019) cited two limitations linked to lower attendance on the interviews, and the refusal of other participants to complete the follow-up interviews during the study. These delimitations negatively influence on the executions of the study conclusions, as low turn up can affect the participants of the sample, and establishes a conclusion error (Hoffmann et al., 2017).

Part B – Supporters and Obstacles

The application of the research’s endorsements must be with regards in light of a given situation where a competent nurse is potential concerned about the reduction of stress among the university students by practising mindfulness. McConville et al., (2019) advised: all health professional scholar students should receive comprehensive skills on management of stress through practising mindfulness. Communications should be based on an open forum to create awareness on the need to reduce stress among students in the university, and universities should embrace the importance of self-health care forums.

At the company scenario, obstacles to the application of these approvals may include an organizational culture that does not support and promote evidence-based exercise; a lack of ample time by employees and huge assignments to proper evaluation the viability of the approvals (Perrin, 2017). Besides, enablers that promote the application of the permissions can include: assisting to improve awareness in an overall of reducing stress among university students; Encouraging university students to understand the benefits of sharing their stress management with their peers and parents; and providing knowledge to all staff utilizing well-organized photographs in clinical areas.

Conclusion

Throughout this critical evaluation of the leading research study, it is deal to conclude that (McConville et al., 2019) choose to research on a significant subject- practising mindfulness to reduce stress among university students-when their scarcity of published studies on the topic. Numerous critical weaknesses of the research study were illuminating including weak rationales for the selection of the research design and population size, the failure to provide a clear disclosure statement, sampling and measurement bias, lack of evident human ethics appreciation, and having supporting literature published in more than five years.

Conversely, McConville et al., (2019) determined, as a result, if their experience, expertise, and access to university facilities, detailed analysis of the reduction of stress among university students by practising mindfulness. The authors acknowledged their research's weaknesses, to their credibility, and come up with four very well thought through approvals. Therefore, it remains for much more research to take place on this vital topic.
