Introduction to Health Studies

1) Urinary Incontinence: In this post I have learnt that it is a condition which occurs from weakness of the central nervous system (Lindam et al., 2020). With the ageing process, occurs delayed response of the motor neuron systems and weakness of the bladder muscles, for instance the pelvic floor muscles which help in micturition and voiding. Because of the weakness of these muscles or lack of sensory control, there is leaking of the urine from the bladder. This is termed as Urinary incontinence. This knowledge helped me to understand the needs of the elderly patients who suffer from loss of bladder control, such as in the case of stroke patients. (Derlien et al., 2019)

2) Evidence based practice: The field of medicine is ever evolving and changing rampantly. It is imperative as a nurse, to have updated knowledge and information regarding the treatment protocols. According to the NMBA standard of Nursing standard 1, “RNs use a variety of thinking strategies and the best available evidence in making decisions and providing safe, quality nursing practice within person-centred and evidence-based frameworks.” Hence it is the duty of the nurse to enhance her professional skill by utilizing evidence and research based in clinical practice. As well as per the NMBA standard 5, “RNs are responsible for the planning and communication of nursing practice. Agreed plans are developed in partnership. They are based on the RNs appraisal of comprehensive, relevant information, and evidence that is documented and communicated.” (NMBA, 2016). It helps in enhancing the quality of healthcare service and patient outcome. (Reenhalgh, Howick & Maskrey, 2014)

3) Australian bureau of statistics (ABS): As a budding nurse, I would explicitly focus on different health conditions and associated risk factors along with types of health services offered for the same (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2019). These measurements can control us in our nursing practice by giving us knowledge of the wellbeing of Australians and if there is a requirement for wellbeing administration. The website highlights the hard-hitting issues of obesity, alcohol, smoking and diabetes to Australians. Expecting, I will come across such type of patients more often requiring vast arena of information on treatment options.
