Impact of coivd-19 on the mental wellbeing of students and their coping strategies for better mental health during lockdown.

A student’s mental health is always an area of interest because of the unpredicted and vulnerable nature of this age group. Any disturbance on individual during their period of attaining education have weighty consequence on their lives for long-term (Patsali et al, 2020). After the outbreak of on-going covid-19 pandemic, the regular academic schedule of students were highly disturbed. A student’s routine revolves around a lot of social interaction, brain mugging academic exercises and various recreational activities. With the implementation of lockdown in most of the countries to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, the educational institutes were also closed. People were suggested to stay indoors and maintain social distancing. Students were entrapped in their houses or dormitories. University students are exposed to unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary behaviour (Gallè et al, 2020). A lack of social support and reduced social interaction and stress associated with covid-19 crisis created a potential harm on the mental health of the students (Elmer et al. 2020). Therefore, it is important to evaluate the effect of covid-19 crisis and lockdown on the mental wellbeing of students. It is been over six months since the world is under lockdown, educational institutes are closed. This study will reveal the mental wellbeing of the students after six months and analyse whether they are able to cope up with the mental health issues faced by them, if any. Many research came forward which indicated the increase in depression, anxiety and stress in students during lockdown period (Patsali et al, 2020). This research questionnaire will carry forward the study on coping strategies adopted by students for better mental wellbeing.

Pre-Testing Procedure and Its Outcome

The pre-testing technique used is Respondent Debriefing (Czaja, 1998). The aim of respondent debriefing is to recognise understandable and information recovery problems and to evaluate close-ended response. In this technique follow-up probe is used while interviewing individuals. Debriefing can be carry out during the questionnaire or after the conclusion of the questionnaire or interview. For this research, the pre-test is the set of questionnaire which investigate the general information of the respondent such as gender, age, academic qualification, what they understand from the term depression, anxiety and stress, their awareness about mental health and the any change they felt in their mental wellbeing before and after the lockdown period. The pre-test was carried out through zoom meeting.

The pre-testing procedure can be summarized as all the respondents is quite familiar with the new method adopted for teaching. They are not facing any major issues regarding it. However, their academic performance is much affected as they are unable to access resources such as lab and college library or digital study materials. The lack of face to face interaction is somehow making them stressful about understanding and delivering the tasks and assignment on time. On the other hand, they are now having more time to work hard and do more research.
