Impact of Healthy Eating Behaviours Amongst Children

Driessen et al., (2014) conducted a systematic review of different studies that showed the positive impact of healthy eating behaviours in correspondence to reduction of prevalence of obesity and overweight amongst children. The study found that schools that provided education on healthy eating and supported the mitigation of unhealthy eating improve the health of children and reduced the prevalence of obesity and also helped in prolonged healthy lifestyle of children at a later stage of life. Similarly, another study by Skouteris et al., (2016) found that using nutritional intervention helped in prolonged healthy life of children between the ages of 20 and 42 months. The study on a 12 month follow up found that these children showed less chances of overweight. Therefore, changing eating behaviours and habits amongst young children is effective in the long term.

According to Australian Medical Association, (2016) the average cost of treatment for adult obese people estimated at $8.6 billion. In 2012, a total of $56.6 billion was spent on treatments of obesity. It is estimated that, the health based costs amongst obese surpass by 60% in comparison the health costs of healthy people. On the other hand, the costs of healthy planned eating and good lifestyle intervention amongst children of age less than 17 is less than half of the total spent in treatment of obese on 2012. Similar statement was made from the economic findings of Ekwaru et al., (2017), that school based health eating habits are more cost effective that treatments in later phases of obese people.

Gordon‐Larsen, Wang & Popkin, (2014) implicated that the body physiology of children and adults have distinctive features. It is easier for children to maintain good health than adults. According to their study based on the data collected from China Health and Nutrition Survey it was found that early life intervention takes lesser time in treatment of obesity amongst children than that of adults. Epstein et al., (2014) also supported it is more cost effective to mitigate obesity amongst children than that in adults.
