Introduction

Business communication is referred as the activity where constant flow of evidence and data is noticed in the economy (Coffelt, Baker & Corey, 2016 p308). It is identified as the medium of understanding on common grounds initiated with the receiver. In today’s economy, organizations run with engaging a large number of individuals and professionals, therefore for the execution of smooth operational activities, business communication is required. One of the popular aspect of it is Intercultural communication, which would be discussed below in detail thoroughly in this assessment report.

Intercultural Communication

Intercultural Communication happens in between individuals who share similar cultural properties and characteristics. The exchange of information in between a social group that belongs or shares same cultural value is commonly identified as mentioned in the former. Globalization of organizations has increased the inevitability of intercultural communication in the economy immensely. The purpose or aim of this is to enhance the understanding of messages exchanged in between culturally mediated individuals or groups at a workplace. The objectives of intercultural communication is as follows.

  • To create a deeper understanding of individual’s cultural characteristics in order to provide them with suitable amenities and experience.

  • To create a significant effect and transformative knowledge through numerous cultures in order to help employees for optimized productivity.

  • To include general culture learning if the company does its business across international bordrs to develop an efficient working team.

The sense of culture and communication is embedded in the concept of intercultural communication. Communication creates a certain kind of essence in one’s culture and it differentiate it with other kinds of it prevailing in the society. Therefore, Intercultural communication helps to create meaning across various cultures to be perceived of something valuable. People of different class, society and groups try to make sense of one another’s habits and lifestyle through its engagement at workplace. As there is no guarantee that people would actually tend to provide space and respect for each other’s culture, hence why strategies are formed to break these barriers. The most common goal of it is to provide learning and services to multicultural social groups. The recognition of cultural difference helps immensely to form a tactical strategy that will achieve its goal to create understanding.

There are two types of intercultural communication – verbal and nonverbal. Verbal communication involves usage of words either spoken or written for the purpose of communication, whereas nonverbal refers to gestures, hand and body movements and eye contact. Cues are also considered a part of nonverbal communication. For example when the company of Coca-Cola used KeKou-KeLa as its phonetic version to be launched in China.

In this article, the term of intercultural communication is widely used to refer the large-scale range of communication in the economy. In an organisation, the human capital is extracted from various cultural backgrounds and they bring different set of experiences and knowledge because of that. Communication is stated to be the ultimate shaper of any culture in the society, therefore the importance of intercultural communication cannot be underestimated. For instance, one individual can have a very different concept of time, body language and personal space than others. This situation is managed easily with the application of intercultural communication. It is noticed that conflicts arises in diverse workplaces, due to language barriers hence why this concept holds its importance. The formation of intercultural policies come into the frame due to this as well. Companies try to celebrate diversity through the inclusion of diverse cultural programs that will establish familiarity among labours about each other’s cultural background. This increases efficiency when teamwork is assigned.

Intercultural communication can be understood by comparing cultures so that focus can be built on diversified interactions. Another way is by shifting the local perspective against global. Characteristics like time, gestures, and space and gender roles can be monitored deeply to understand the pillars of one’s culture. It is generally seen to be applied in international businesses in the economy. It happens to motivate the diverse staff to adhere compliance to disciplinary guidelines and policies of the organisations.

The new modern approach towards intercultural communication concept is by the renowned scholar names Oetzel. In this theory the aspects of situational feature, composition of a group or a team affects the outcome of a given task is stated. The outcome is then considered tome constructive feedback to improve on previous faulty actions if any.

Reflection

The above discussion is about intercultural communication as the essential part of business communication used by various international organisations in the economy. I consider the internal part of business communication to be more essential as it helps to form healthy corporate relations, which is beneficial for long term survival of businesses. According to me, I think that cultural diversity is the key to achieve innovative greatness by a company. Though cultural staff high level of strangeness and low level of familiarity with each other. To eradicate this, the application of intercultural communication is done. Therefore, in international organisation, cultural diverse teams or groups is formed to achieve the completions of various tasks that compiles to the processes of production system. There are two dynamics to these diversified groups – positive and negative.

The positive aspect is that if a workgroup is diversified it will bring multiple creative ideas to the table. It also brings exposure to diverse mindsets on one particular matter, which helps the completion of tasks faster. The customer base is diverse to many international organisations, therefore, culturally different perspectives and skillset, creates a sense about what would be perceived valuable by them.

The negative aspect is that it gets difficult to communicate, if the organisation has culturally diverse staff due to linguistic barrier. The non-familiar symbolic gestures can also create a situation of conflict among the workers, which is unwanted. The possibility of personal prejudice is high as the backgrounds and thinking methods is different.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that the importance of intercultural communication is required to study business communications properly. The growth of international businesses has led to increased focus on this concept. Intercultural communication helps to break down the barriers that obstructs maximum optimisation in diversified workplaces. Good management of culturally different individuals is gained through application of communication theories. If harmony is instated among a diversified team, there would be no limit to various creative ideas that can strongly serve the diverse customer base as well. Business communication is enhanced due to the implementation of such programmes that promotes healthy relations and benefits of utilising experiences of different cultures.

Recommendation

In order to improve the group dynamics through effective intercultural communication, few recommendations are provided which can be charted by organisations in the marketplace to gain benefit over others.

  1. One of the major issues of workplace diversity is that people or employees feel that they cannot expose their lifestyle as they feel they need to hide it. Therefore, with the help of ‘workplace inclusivity’ organisations can create an environment, which makes diverse staff to practice their lifestyle, as they would do outside the official infrastructure.

  2. Organisations can eradicate the negative aspects of culturally diverse staff through honouring and accepting multiple religious and cultural practices. Putting focus on providing commonly celebrated and renowned festivals of various cultures and providing holidays to the staff accordingly will create a sense of loyalty and satisfaction in their mind towards the company.

  3. The international organisations shall include the habit of respecting and inviting all the staff to participate in voicing their opinion regardless of any cultural background. Employees should feel that they work for same goal and shall feel connected to each other irrespective of their cultural differences.
