Self reflection is one of the most beneficial methods to engage in experiential learning, as it leads to a higher degree of emotional intelligence along with improvements in competencies to think critically. The current study is a personal reflective account regarding the role play undertaken in the previous assessment and how it allowed me to question my own conceptions and assumptions.

The session was certainly enriching and enlightening by all means, especially in terms of developing my communication competencies. In terms of the major highlights within the role play session, majority of the discussion primarily related to how communication is significant in the modern era and how individuals could strive to develop their skill sets over time. However, prior to the session, there were a certain set of assumptions that I sub consciously had arrived upon, especially in the context of how the role play sessions would go through.

As the session progressed and the communicative channels were established, I gradually managed to gain a better understanding of the viewpoints put forward by the other person. Micro skills such as actively listening to what the other person has to say and deciphering the contents of his or her statements objectively is a crucial component of clear and transparent communication (Linden, 2017). It allows for a clearer reflection of the content as well as a deeper sense of understanding over time.

It is important to note that the process of reflection must also include the ability to understand the emotion behind the content and the communication. A self reflection process that is comprehensive would inherently lead to an improvement in the ability to develop emotional intelligence over time (Thudt et al., 2018). Emotional intelligence is strongly linked to understanding one’s own emotions along with gauging the reasons and motives behind emotional displays by people in the surrounding. I also read about the Gibb’s model of reflection recently and found an alignment in terms of how the role play session was being conducted and how it could help me engage in the process of reflection in a more effective manner.

The Gibb’s model essentially breaks down the process of reflection into five key stages including description, feelings, evaluation, conclusion and the analysis (Dressler et al., 2018). It is a crucial aspect that individuals must strive to develop over time as it is relevant to both professional as well as personal contexts. Furthermore, the role play session also tapped into a sense of introspection personally, where I was able to critically analyze the situation and gauge the underlying connotations and feelings within the communicative channels.

Throughout our course module, we were engaged in a number of different units and assignments that highlighted the importance of effective communication and the how quality of the communication channels was significant. Additionally, the different types of communication that could be relied upon were also discussed in an extensive manner. Conventionally, communication channels can be classified as either verbal communication or non verbal communication. However, several other forms and channels inherently come into play, which I experienced to some extent during the role play session. Primarily including implicit connotations and indirect communicative content, I believe that they add to the overall essence of the communication along with enhancing the relevance of the content in a progressive manner.

While thinking through and completing the reflective account, I also managed to gain a deeper understanding as to how biases and personal assumptions tend to limit the quality of the communication. An open mind is of paramount importance to ensure a clear and transparent flow of communication, especially when the parties involved are relatively unrelated or unknown to each other. Furthermore, an empathetic demeanour is also very important as it leads to a greater degree of comprehension and understanding (Fonagi et al., 2017).

During the role play session, I consistently tried to intake what the other person was putting out with the intent to listen and gauge the content as opposed to simply hearing with the motive to respond. I believe this too, is an important skill set, especially when engaging in professional or personal communication. Empathy and the depiction of compassion can go a long way when attempting to extract the most out of a conversation or a communication process (Yang & Tu, 2019). Furthermore, it tends to be assistive irrespective of the parties involved or the setting within which the channels are being established.

Confidence and respect, in my opinion, are also important elements within every communication channel. The factors are extremely beneficial to create a comfortable environment for the communicative processes to take place in the most effective manner possible (Stogsdill, Phung & Williams, 2020). The setting within which the conversation or communication is taking place is crucial to ensure that the exchange of information or dialogue remains fruitful. Noise factors can significantly degrade the quality of the conversation process, often leading to a lack of comprehension and understanding along with an increase in potential to misunderstand or make mistaken judgements.

Throughout our module, we were also taught about various communication models and frameworks that extensively discuss the theoretical aspects behind effective communication. I found Berlo’s model of communication to be relevant during the role play session. The model essentially breaks down effective communication into three major factors comprised of the sender, the receiver and the channel through which the messages are transferred. I kept the course learnings in my head while communicating with the client during the role play session, and I am certainly of the opinion that it led to a greater degree of clarity and understanding over the discourse of the session. Lastly, I firmly believe that communication is a two way process. All the parties involved must actively contribute to the communication process as it leads to improved comprehension and clarity of understanding.

In conclusion, I believe that the role play session was an enlightening experience in terms of gaining a practical understanding of how communication is important. Throughout the process of self reflection, I also managed to establish the important factors that determine the quality of the communication, which related to empathy, an open mind and mutual respect.
