In the discussion forum, I learned about the various leadership styles and the tests that helped to evaluate my personal style of leadership. Todays exercise helped me evaluate and reflect upon my leadership style in view of task orientation and relationship orientation. I understood that leaders can broadly have two orientations. Task orientation would mean that I help fellow team member to define their roles and understand the expected outcomes. This expresses that as a leader I would be more directive and give instruction on how a task is to be performed and focus only on the outputs. My personal score was moderately low which expresses that I have a medium tendency of being task oriented. My predominant style of leadership came out to be relationship oriented as I scored between 40-44 on the relationship scale in the style questionnaire. This helped me to understand that as a leader I am relationship oriented which means I value the feeling of my subordinates. I always try to make my team members feel good and comfortable while doing work. I want them to have good relationships among themselves as well as with me. I am a people-oriented leader. Further on the technical skill, I evaluated my self on three different skills which were technical skill, human skill, and conceptual skill. My results showed a high range on the human and conceptual skill while a moderate range on the technical skill.
This means that as a leader I have a good ability to interact with people at work and manage and cooperate with them. High conceptual skills reflect my capability to formulate new ideas and creative problem-solving capability. A moderate score on the technical skill helped me understand that I have moderate knowledge about the processes, techniques, and tools. This helped me evaluate my strength and weakness as a leader. According to my evaluation and scores, I realized that I have strength in the conceptual and human skill which means I am good with people and have creative ideas to approach issues and problems, however, my weakness lies in the technical skills. Therefore, as a leader, I must enhance my knowledge about the process and techniques to increase efficiency. After taking the leadership trait questionnaire I got an even clear perspective about what I think about myself and what my team members feel about me as a leader. Across various traits like empathy, persistence, determination and so on, I marked myself and others marked me.
This was a great insight about self and others perception about me. This session indeed helped me analyze my strengths and weaknesses as a leader and gave me a clear view of my style of leadership. I could efficiently apply the leadership concepts onto myself and evaluate myself. I also got a clear idea about how others perception may differ to our own and how we must be positive to understand their perception identify our weakness and work on them to transform ourselves into a more effective leader. This session opened up my perspective on my own behavioral characteristics and was a great learning experience.10
