Leadership is the process of influencing others to maximize their efforts in the direction of achievement of organizational goals and objectives. Leadership arises from socially influencing others and not practicing authority or power anyone. A leader leads and helps followers to accomplish a task, while a manager, gives orders to get the work done. Employees are engaged in decision-making to maximize the potential of their efforts (Kruse, 2013).
High performing organization is a scientifically validated conceptual framework used by management to identify key areas in the organization which demand improvement for better performance of company and to make it sustainable. Managers put in their own expertise and experience, to draft a variant as per organizational setting in an attempt to transform an organization to a high performing organization (HPO center, 2020).
A study has found that only one in a group of seven people, has the ability to become a leader. Hiring the right talent and ensuring their development is imperative to build and transform them to take up leadership positions in future and drive business success. Rigorous assessment and monitoring of people in an organization along with offering opportunities for development, helps instill leadership qualities in employees. It brings in faster decision-making, helps introduce changes more effectively and empowers an organization to face challenges with resilience (DeRosa, 2019).
Leadership plays a crucial role in ensuring success of an organization. Leaders inspire people to follow them and complete work by exhibiting standard performance. Leadership sets key performance expectations from employees and provides coaching/training to them, to ensure compliance with performance indicators. Leaders fuel in synergy for the followers to perform and complete tasks efficiently and effectively by demonstrating to them the vision of the company. This allows the leader to integrate the company’s core values with decision-making. It in not possible to get the people in organization to work in a certain direction, if they do not know the way. Here, a leader comes into play and enlightens the path to achievement of success for the people by guiding their activities (Lee, 2020).
It is important to develop leadership capabilities in employees. There are several approaches which can be adopted to instill leadership capabilities in people. A leader must identify the leadership skills which must be inculcated in employees like motivation, delegation and communication and draft activities and processes in the same direction to build these skills and values. Providing more responsibilities which will help develop skills through learning will help build talent among them and foster leadership. Also, provide more autonomy to employees in decision-making to give room for innovation and creativity. Offer opportunities for career growth and development. Provide training to employees with the help of an experienced leader who understands the company’s mission and vision. Mentorship through succession planning can be brought into place driving leadership skills (Brouard, 2019).
My experience working with a high-performing organization truly, was a great learning and development one. As a part of the team which was goal focused and carried out all the processes in collaboration spirit, and by using innovative techniques, we were able to deliver high quality results in time by putting in excellent performance through shared goals and leadership, open communication and trust among team members. The company encouraged innovation, provided access to open lines of communication, fostered motivation, autonomy in decision-making and boosted our confidence to complete work effectively (SHRM, 2020).
When it comes to characterizing my own leadership skills, as per me a leader must have the ability to lead people by providing motivation, and direction. He must be able to identify their strengths and empower them to succeed by providing responsibilities. A leader should be able to think strategically and take decisions in consultation with his team which are in the best interest of organization. Conflict management and ensuring employee participation through taking their opinion must be the instilled and a leader must challenge himself to think out of the box and chart out ways to establish a culture which leads to increase productivity and drives profits to the organization (Lewis university, 2020).
I aspire to become a dynamic leader who has the potential to lead people and think strategically with the help of an entrepreneurial mindset. I hope that the course helps me learn and develop social skills which enables me to gain high potential to solve problems, face challenges and drive motivation in me. Yes, I have taken steps in this regard and am analyzing my personality to come up with a development plan (Fuhl, 2019).
The essay defines leadership as the art of influencing people in an organization to get the work done. It identifies ways to develop skills of people and how leadership becomes the reason behind successful companies. It gives the approaches and methods to develop leadership capabilities and includes my personal experience in a high growth company, along with my aspirations to develop skills and become a leader.
