Introduction to Leadership

Leadership refers to the procedure of actions emphasized on the objectives of groups and it is the most vital skill that can assist one to make efficient decisions. Moreover, it is consistently recognized as a plan of behavior with specific goals. It indicates the process of motivating the activities of the systemized team to the attainment of objectives. Today, in an intensely competitive environment in the business scenario, it is important for every individual to build effective leadership skills. Effective leadership can be created by following a transformational leadership style while leading the team and group (Putra & Cho, 2019). The major goals of this type of leadership are to bring change management, strategic management, a unified organizational structure, motivation among members, innovation and creativity, and more. This essay is set to reflect on my experience that helped me to develop my transformational leadership skills. Moreover, this essay discusses concepts like conflict management, change management theory, communication, and transformational leadership theory in order to further assist in gaining effective leadership skills.

Specific Challenge/ Experience

I was a project leader of a team in an organization where I had to lead and guide my members on a daily basis to keep them inspire and engage in the tasks allocated to them. My experience was that when I was leading a project team in an organization and demonstrating my leadership style to the followers, they all were not much influenced and motivated by me. It also decreased the productivity of the participants and the business as a whole. It is due to the fact that I was an autocratic leader who does not involve members in the decision making of the company. However, some certain theories and concepts helped me develop the skills required for an effective leader.

Factors that Impacted My Experience

Certain factors are responsible for developing and improving my leadership skills. These are professional, social, personal, cultural, and environmental factors. Professionalism is one of the important factors that made me realize the importance of transformational leadership. This factor further entails positive outcomes from all the members, the higher motivation of workers, enhanced level of employee satisfaction, and more. Furthermore, the environmental factors that are affecting my leadership development are changes in the technology, diverse culture of the organization, constantly changing staff of the company, traditions of diverse workers within a team, and more. Other factors may include weakness in the use of technology, lack of time value, religion, communication style, consistency, compassion, and connection to the purpose (Malik, Javed & Hassan, 2017).

Concepts of Leadership Skills

Transformational Leadership Theory

As a result of my experience, I have developed effective leadership skills using the theory of transformational leadership. This theory played an important role in changing my attitude towards leading the team members. Transformational leadership theory defines the process in which leaders take care of the desires and aims of their groups to bring about a motivational environment for them. With this theory, I learned numerous things about coordinating and managing the group members, communicating effectively with each other, and more. Furthermore, there are four aspects of transformational leadership named as inspirational motivation, individual consideration, idealized influence, and intellectual stimulation. This theory has changed me and produced a positive and valuable change in myself for handling the people. It enhanced my morale, motivation, and performance of team members with numerous techniques. My experience of leading a team with a domineering role made me understand the desires of people from me as a leader. I must bring about change in my leadership skills that could better handle a team with soft communication skills, honesty, gratitude, motivation, and justice (Andriani, Kesumawati & Kristiawan, 2018).

Change Management Theory

There is no doubt that transformational leaders are creative and innovative and more adaptive t changes. Hence, it is required for me to understand the change management theory to be an effective transformational leader. Change management usually indicates the method of how teams and organizations incorporate corporate changes. It is a well-known fact that change is a common strand that occurs through all organizations irrespective of the size, and industry. Change management is the continuous activity that takes knowledge, commitment, time, and hard work to incorporate. Moreover, it requires the engagement of people of the company to bring about change and to accept the change. It is also true that to bring about a change, it is important to understand the nature of change. To attain this objective, Lewin’s change management theory is the best theory of management that assisted me to implement the change. This theory further helped me in becoming effective transformational leadership skills that are creative and innovative for changes (Hussain et al, 2018). Furthermore, Kotter's change management theory is also an effective theory that is emphasized in eight stages to bring about change in an organization. This theory helped me in accepting the change and made me organize for it rather than varying itself.

Communication: Emotional Intelligence Theory

Transformational leaders indeed are those who are competent to communicate effectively with every individual. Therefore, one must understand the human skills, technical skills, and conceptual skills that can be attained through emotional intelligence theory. It can be said that emotional intelligence is positively linked with the transformational leadership that further contributes to higher job performance and management. To become an effective transformational leader, one needs to develop high emotional intelligence in him to be a successful leader. Emotional intelligence theory refers to the skill to observe emotions, to measure and produce feelings so as to support thought, and to promote expressive and intelligent growth. There are five components of the Emotional intelligence theory that helped in developing my transformational leadership skills. These components are given to be Goleman and are named as self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, social skills, and internal motivation (Salman, 2017). This theory is best for improving the communication skills that are required for transformational leadership as it aids in preserving robust relations with others and make one fit in suitably in the group situations (Hendon, Powell & Wimmer, 2017). Therefore, it helps me in self-regulation and hence reduces the chances of conflict in the group while leading.

Conflict Management Theory

 A transformational leader must have knowledge and skills of how to resolve and manage conflicts at the workplace. This can be done using the conflict management theory is the practice of being able to identify and handle conflicts sensibly, fairly, and efficiently. This concept made me understand the skills required for the management of conflicts like patience, active listening, impartiality, positivity, emotional intelligence, open communication, and more. Therefore, this concept helped in developing my transformational leadership skills. This has induced in me the skills of addressing and resolving the conflicting interest of two or more individuals in a low-trust and high feeling environment (Grubaugh & Flynn, 2018).

Actions and Strategies of Leadership Skills

This experience of mine has changed me from a domineering personality to a participatory role. Furthermore, I will ensure to constantly develop my leadership skills to remain competitive by keep practicing my communication skills, management skills, and problem-solving strengths, relationship management, trustworthiness, empathy for individuals, and more. In my future career in the field of nursing, I would require certain skills like professionalism, cultural awareness, time management, compassion, critical thinking, excellent communication skills, people skills, and more. Furthermore, the leadership skills that I need to work and improve on our mentorship, and dedication to excellence to become successful in the nursing profession. The standards that are needed for this profession are ethics, accountability, administration, decision-making skills, and more.

The actions and strategies that I would like to implement are that I need to build a high level of confidence in myself to become successful in the nursing field. Moreover, I would like to develop effective communication and relationship skills through emotional intelligence to show empathy to the patients in the nursing profession. One such way to get success in Nursing is to develop strong transformational leadership skills. It will help me in increasing the morale of the staff and hence their productivity and job satisfaction (Fischer, 2017). Further strategies that must be implemented are to prepare me for being passionate, sensitive, decisive, supportive, and solution-oriented. Self-awareness is the most crucial element to get success in the nursing profession. Therefore, I will understand the emotional intelligence theory to understand the importance of self-awareness.

Conclusion on Leadership Skills

From the above reflection on the leadership experience at the workplace, it can be concluded that my experience helps in knowing my weak points in leading the team that became unproductive with my domineering leadership in the previous times. However, there are certain concepts that helped in developing my effective leadership skills. These concepts are transformational leadership theory, conflict management theory, emotional intelligence in communication, and change management theory. A transformational leader must have the ability to resolve the conflicts by understanding its nature and cause, to show empathy to team members, communicate effectively with them, and involve them in the decision making of the company. Furthermore, it can be inferred that the actions and strategies that I would like to implement are that I need to build a high level of confidence in myself to become successful in the nursing field. Additionally, the leadership skills that I need to work and improve on are mentorship and dedication to excellence.
