Chernobyl Gas Disaster

The Chernobyl Gas Disaster has been taken place in the year 1986. The incident took place at Ukraine Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It has been found that the fault was in the flawed Soviet reactor design along with the mistakes made by the operators. It was also a result of lack of safety culture which was a consequence of Cold war isolation.

It has been found that the disaster has resulted in steam explosion. The fires have released at least 5% of radioactive reactor that was core into the environment. As a result many of the radioactive materials have been deposited in different parts of Europe. The explosion caused death of two workers of the Chernobyl plant in nighttime when the accident took place. The acute radiation syndrome caused death of 28 people within the few weeks of the disaster. As per the “United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation” has stated that there is not major public health impact has been identified that can be attributed to the exposure to radiation even after 20 years of the disaster apart from some 6500 thyroid cancers. The incident took 350,000 people to be evacuated, however, relocation and resettlement of the people of the area is going on. Initially 237 people have been diagnosed with acute radiation syndrome (ARS). Between the year of 1987 and 2004, nineteen more workers have died though those cannot be essentially attributed to the disaster.

Supplementary feed water pumps have been used to inject 200-300 tonnes of water for setting off the fire. This incident has caused a huge uncontrolled radioactive exposure into the environment that is recorded as the most rare and harmful release in the history. Serious economic and social disruption took place as a result of this disaster for the people living in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. Estimation indicates that half of the “iodine and caesium” and other 5% radioactive materials in the Chernobyl has released (World Nuclear Association, 2020). Casualties have taken place for the firefighters that attempted initial fire at the top of the building. Out 28 of the dead people there were six firefighters who died due to exposure to high dosage of radiation.

It can be concluded that the disaster has lead to face difficulties in sustaining a healthy life even after some years after the disaster if the radioactive exposure can be held responsible for the death.
