Is Maritime Space Important?

Introduction

Maritime space is the surface of inaccurate space where several activities are conducted. The maritime space involves the communication and circulation routes, like the navigation routes and transoceanic canals. According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, maritime space identifies the edge of international waters. However, the maritime area has remained indeterminate regardless of the efforts to clarify the boundaries. The maritime space is an essential resource for the existence of the earth. It is, therefore, necessary to keep the maritime environment, such as seas and oceans safe, healthy, and productive1. Also, the maritime environment contributes to economic development, social well-being, and quality of life. The resources of the marine space have enhanced economic growth, hence the need for its protection. The aim of this paper is to determine the importance of maritime space.

Importance of Maritime Space

Marine space is essential when it comes to the benefits that are realized from shipping. In as much as a few people recognize shipping transportation, the marine area has been used as an essential transportation means. Shipping transportations provides efficient and cheap transportation. The use of shipping transport helps in the economic development of many nations across the globe. Economic progress in the countries is attained through the growth of foreign trade, which increases domestic production and consumption of goods. Many countries in the world today depend on maritime trade to sell and buy what they produce. Most of the raw materials that are later processed into finished products re transported by the use of the maritime space. This shows that no nation is entirely self-sufficient hence the dependence on marine space for transportation.

Maritime space is the backbone of trade all over the globe. The livelihood of people in the industrialized and developing nations depends on ship transportation. The shipping industry has played an essential role in the improvement of the living standards of people in various parts of the world. This shows the importance of the maritime space in the livelihood of many people around the globe.

Maritime space can be regarded to be equally essential as a result of the increasing responsibility to control and protect the territorial waters. Various nations have found themselves at war as a result of maritime space. This shows how essential maritime space is to the economic development of multiple countries. Maritime spaces are considered to be economic zones for various nations as a result of the resources that are found in the territories. Maritime protection is done through the use of satellite telecommunications that help in the location of vessels and data identification for authorities in various nations. The surveillance of the maritime space shows the importance of marine space. Also, naval space has been essential in preventing the illegal trafficking of people, drugs, and weapons. This is also done through the use of technological innovations. Some of the main technological innovations that have been used in countering illegal transportation in the maritime space include radar technologies and surface patrol crafts.

The importance of maritime space has led to the use of space technologies that aid in various operations in the marine environment. Metrological forecasts that use satellite observations and satellite communications have helped in maritime security. Enhanced navigation accuracy, marine environmental monitoring, and marine surveillance are some of the other technological innovations that are essential in various maritime technologies4. Maritime space has made significant contributions in monitoring the arctic operations, protection of the marine environment, and integrated vessel surveillance. The importance of the marine area has led to the need for tracking through the use of radar satellites, which help in detecting any illegal oil discharging into the marine environment. Also, the importance of Marine space has led to the routine monitoring of the quality of water in oceans and seas. This is done by detecting suspended sediments in the water and any dissolved matter.

In conclusion, the maritime space is essential in economic development, security, and environmental protection across the globe. In as much as many people are not aware of the role played by the shipping industry, it is one of the leading industries that has contributed to the development of many nations in the world.

Question 2

South China Sea Dispute

The South China Sea Dispute is a conflict about the maritime and island claims among many states such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, The People’s Republic of China, Philippines, and the Republic of China. This war conflict is a result of the role the sea play in global trade. The sea is used as an essential transportation means for many of the goods used in China, such as energy. For instance, about 39% of China’s total trade passes through the sea. The dispute is about some features at sea, such as islands, reefs, and banks.

The nations involved in the South China Dispute have different territorial claims over the sea, which they base on historical and geographical accounts. China makes allegations that it owns more than 80% of the sea space, whereas Vietnam alleges that it owns the Paracel Islands and the Spratly Islands. On the other hand, the Philippines claims that it owns features like the Scarborough, whereas Brunei and Malaysia allege that they own the Southern part of the Sea and other parts of the Spratly Islands. All these claimants have seized control of the sea over the years.

The South China Sea Dispute can be considered to be a significant dispute space because it is a major commercial feature connecting three continents, which are Africa, Asia, and Europe. Also, it has been a major area of conflict because of the many natural resources that exist within its seabed. A large portion of the global shipping passes through the South China Sea. In addition to this, the sea also has principal reserves of natural resources like natural gas and oil. Also, the South China Sea comprises about 10% of the world's fisheries, making it the primary source of food for many people7. All these factors have contributed to the dispute between the nations concerning who owns which part of the sea.
