In this report I will conduct a self- analysis of the leadership styles that I have and also discuss the different techniques that I can use to enhance my leadership skills. In this report, I am going to make use of the models and perspectives of leadership, culture and people, as per the discussions made in the course. In this report a few self-examination techniques would be used to determine knowledge that I have gained during the course and the way it is going to assist in the development of my career in the future. In the context, I am going to analyze my job-related skills, beliefs, area of interest, persona as well as proficiency.
I think I make use of democratic leadership style in the course of heading my class towards a particular project.
Democratic leadership is a way of leading in which all the individuals belonging to a particular team are enabled to take part in the process of making decisions to meet the goals of the team (Khan et al., 2015). It has been determined that a democratic leader is the most adequate style of leading a group and it is also considered to generate fruitful results. It is a kind of leadership that improves the output of a particular team and enhances the level of assistance from the members of the group. Also, it plays a great role in terms of increasing the confidence of the members of a group. In this type of leadership, the different members of a group are allowed to discuss a particular topic, share their perspectives and then come to a decision.
I think the use of democratic leadership made the project that I was heading a huge sucesss. The project included the ideas and perspectives of all the members of my team and hence it emerged to be a successful one. I remember an instance, when I selected a theme for the project, but I was not sure if it was going to fetch any benefit for me and my team. I decided to act as a democratic leader and ask the members of my team to share their point of views on the same (Iqbal et al., 2015). I think the discussion on the topic that I had with my group, assisted me in refining the topic that I selected for the project. I remember drafting the framework for the project and sharing it with my team and enabling them to share their perspectives on the same. I think the ideas shared by the group members were good in some or the other way but it was determined to be against the viewpoints shared by the other members, leading to a chaos in the group. In this context, I made use of my democratic skill and made the final decision after considering the ideas shared by the members of the group. But, in spite of the success achieved, the project took huge time to accomplish, as a lot of time was wasted in attempting to gain an agreement with the other members of the group.
1. Job- Related Beliefs- As determined from the above discussed experience, I think I have the potential to act in an independent manner and manage the different group activities in an effective way (Fiaz et al., 2017). Also, I have the potential to assist the other members of my team by means of resolving their problems and thereby proving to be a great leader. I think, if a situation requires me to be strict with the group members, I will fail in doing the same and this hampers my leadership skills. I think I lack the skill of being organized and hence need to work more on the same (Özreçberoğlu et al., 2018). Moreover, if I work using a particular plan I will land up being more successful in terms of executing my project and the result will also be more effective.
2. Interests: As determined from the above experience, my interest is in the direction of team-work. Due to this interest only, I was effective enough in managing my group, in spite of the different chaos that has occurred in the situation (Ukaidi, 2016). Also, I have an interest in listening to others that enabled me to patiently listen to others and thereby make the decision on behalf of my team. But sometimes being too submissive can create an obstruction in exercising effective leadership skills.
3. Persona: Through the use of the MBTI ( Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), I determined that I have a great team-management skill (Phillips,2016). I ensured that the project assigned to my team was completed with the given deadline, hence my time-management skills are also up-to the mark. By considering the above, I think, I have an appropriate personality of being a leader.
4. Aptitude- In the due course of completing the project I realized that I have great communication as well as management skills (Sousa et al., 2019). I was able to easily deliver my message to the other members of my team and also they were able to interpret those communications appropriately. Also, I was able to resolve any kind of a group conflict in an effective manner. For instance, when the view-points of the group members went against each other, I patiently listened to all of them and took the final decision in the same context.
Through the use of the above self-analysis and assessment techniques, I have successfully determined my key capacities and weakness in terms of leadership skills. I think I would be required to work more on my leadership skills and practice a little stringent attitude. Thus, in order to improve my leadership skills, I should learn where to stop the interference of the group members and take hold over the situation (Harris, 2016). If I don’t practice the same, I will always land up being in a chaos and making the situation more complicated. Also, I will work towards improving my organizing skills, so that I am able to manage my team in a more effective manner. Furthermore, I should even work towards enhancing my planning skills that will contribute towards improving my leadership skills.
Hence, it can be concluded that I acquired appropriate leadership skills in the due course of the project but it still needs some level of enhancement, assisting me to be a better leader in the future.
