Therapeutic Communication in Nursing

Nursing is the field of social sciences when the case is of following nursing standards and practice. Reflection is the one activity that helped me in showcasing my critical understanding of the role and responsibilities of a registered nurse. In this assignment, the reflection will be based on therapeutic communication in nursing.

Description of Mental Health Clinical Simulation

Being an oncology nurse in a healthcare organization, I saw the patient and felt that she is suffering from breast cancer based on signs and symptoms she reflected. After the investigations, the results were presented through reports that she was suffering from this disease. The doctor revealed the results in front of her and her family (Abdolrahimi, M., Ghiyasvandian, S., Zakerimoghadam, et al., 2017).

Feelings of Mental Health Clinical Simulation

The issue arouses here was the representation of results by the doctor. It was really bad news for her as well as her family members. However, the doctor presented directly, and the patient and her family members appeared to be emotionally disrupted. I also saw the results but was very difficult for me to abruptly introduce without establishing the emotional needs of them.

Evaluation of Mental Health Clinical Simulation

From this case, I assume that therapeutic communication is the way to present information the information in the way patient and family wants to get. It helps in catering to the patient's physical and emotional needs in a smooth process. Blake & Blake in 2019, also states that therapeutic communication responds to emotions, patient self-management, managing uncertainty, making decisions, promoting healing relationships, and exchanging information.

Analysis of Mental Health Clinical Simulation

The Nursing professional standards 2 and 4 (NMBA guidelines) must be followed along with communication strategies like sympathy, determining, empathy, and involving patient’s concerns and needs (Martin & Chanda, 2016).

Conclusion on Mental Health Clinical Simulation

From this scenario, I conclude that doctor must present the information in the way family and patient wants to listen.

Action Plan on Mental Health Clinical Simulation

The action plans will include the following communication strategies that will best fit the scenario and positively affects the outcome.
