According to Dwyer & Hopwood (2019), Business communication refers to an important in which employees need to possess effective interpersonal skills to initiate positive relationships while working together for a common purpose to accomplish work tasks and objectives. Or in other words, Business communication is an effective process of sharing or exchanging information to promote and attain organizational goals and objectives and increased profit within the organization. There are usually 4 types of business communication that a company opts for according to their company stricture and work culture. The 4 types of business communication incorporate Internal Upwards communication, Internal Downwards communication, lateral/horizontal communication, and external communication. Lateral/Horizontal communication is one of the most effective business communication forms uses by most of the organizations. Lateral communication is a process in which two people with the same rank communicate with each other to work together on a common goal. According to Infoscience Today Organization, (2020), this form of communication is the best fit to resolve the issues by practising enhanced team-work, boosting team efficiency, accomplishing tasks, and maintaining goodwill. Due to the several beneficial characteristics of Lateral/horizontal business communication like time-saving, efficiency, immediate feedback, and coordination and cooperation, companies prefer this form over others. Lateral communication saves time by making urgent decisions on the spot, maintains coordination, and cooperation by bringing employees together at work. Besides that, brining employees together through this form to work on a common goal organization achieves efficiency, raises productivity, removes chances of misunderstandings by getting immediate feedback, and allows the employee to discuss their matters both personally and directly. Google, Apple, and many other innovative pioneered tech companies had used this lateral communication model in their startup phase to gain instant access to the database and trusted information. To avoid data flow disruption, many giant companies used this form in their company’s beginning phases.

Critique on Peer Post

According to my peer’s original post, the topic chosen was COVID-19 and its effects on the mental health of the students, workers, and the whole population in general. As per the statement by the Australian Government Department of Health (2020), coronavirus or COVID-19 is a recently discovered virus that incorporates various types of respiratory problems varying from the common cold to severe cold, and many more similar issues. According to me, this post presented isn’t fully comprehensive. There are a few more things that could be added to the post. As my peer post has identified various causes of distress in the population like uncertainty, unexpected lockdown, financial losses, and conflicting messages. Moreover, the post has discussed the impacts of this pandemic on various other segments of the society like a higher risk of health issues to elderly people and the people with pre-existing medical conditions, financial stability, and many more. The post could have also discussed all other important reasons for mental health in this crisis like job loss and income insecurity, social isolation, burnout, and strain among healthcare workers, and stress associated with poor physical health. As per me, the original post covers all the plausible characteristics that are relevant in the context of the topic. There’s a very effective example related to the scenario that has been discussed in the post. The post has stated the findings of a study, as per which the online survey in Hong Kong states that the rate of anxiety and depression recorded a rise in the last 6 months whereas another interesting finding was that students also find online classes and counselling more appealing and comfortable. Though both the statements are quite contradictory and if it were presented with two different examples, then it would have been more suitable as per the post. Therefore, this can be concluded from the peer post that the corona disease epidemic and quarantine has various effects on both the social and psychological mindset of the individual. Besides this, the outcomes demonstrated tension and the social union that brought about by Coronavirus had a significant factual connection with psychological wellness (Alizadeh & Saffarinia, 2020).

Summarise Learning

According to Pikhart (2018), Intercultural business communication has gotten an unquestionable requirement in this day and age. Specifically, in the crisis of COVID-19, business communication has become a challenge for the companies as now they have to opt for the strategy that suits them best in this scenario. I can conclude after this report that my views on effective business communication have entirely changed. Earlier my understanding was that the lateral business communication method was one of the most effective communication methods but I have realized that every communication technology has its characteristic and suitability according to the organization’s work culture and organizational framework. But as per my opinion, still, lateral business communication is one of the effective methods to encourage teamwork, enhance productivity, and sorted communication. It is important to comprehend the significance and need of good business correspondence, supposing that business correspondence in the association is at a more elevated level, at that point the connection between the association and its customers is at a more elevated level also (Stevanovic & Gmitrović, 2015). The 3 key points that I have learned from the discussions during this course study that I can apply in future scenarios. Firstly, I recognized and learned that business communication is highly important in an organization, as it would help me in achieving organizational goals and exchanging business information effectively. Secondly, I also realized the importance of business communication in controlling and directing the subordinates, therefore, in the future, effective business communication will help me out in preparing an effective plan for the organization and collect information from different sources, and help in increasing efficiency of employees. The last important thing that I learned was the importance of initiating a change. The peer post helped me in developing my professional skills by enhancing my leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
