Values, Beliefs and Behaviours Healthcare Assessment Answer

Assessment 1: Reflection

Introduction

The initial point for morality and ethics is values. The values, beliefs and behavior are the cultural identity of every individual. Ethic, values and morals are the three interrelated and intervened concepts. The values that one possesses can be hierarchy or flexible. Some are very rigid with them and few of them are flexible that can be changed. In a healthcare profession, one may encounter cases on everyday basis where the professionals are supposed to identify their beliefs, values and ethics which helps them to differentiate between their own and others values and beliefs. This difference ultimately leads to the quality of care provided by the nurses in healthcare profession.

Values

Nursing is the profession in which nurses take care of the patients, provide healing, prevent them from illness, facilitate their physical and emotional needs and empathise with them (American Nurses Association, 2019). Nurses have both professional and personal values that play very important role in nurse’ lives. It affects the decision making of a nurse and thus affects the quality of care provided by them to the patients (Moyo, 2016). Professional values of nurses are adapted during the nursing socialization from the experiences, colleagues and codes of ethics. The personal values are acquired from the culture and society that one lives in. personal values give a sense of individuality (Al-Banna, 2017). This affects the decision making and the quality of care so I believe the continuous learning should be the best adopted personal values by the nurses. According to Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, standard 3.3 for registered nurse, for a continuous self-development, nurse should utilise a lifelong learning approach. This would be the best approach as it would not hamper the patient care. Continuous learning should be the first approach of personal value that should be learnt by nurses.

A nurse should preserve the patient’s integrity because it is considered one of the main and important aspects in delivering the care. The important professional values that every nurse must imbibe are the continuous learning, integrity, respecting the diversity, human dignity, altruism that sets the framework for providing care to the patients (Schmidt & McArthur, 2018). The cordial relationship with the patient maintaining the nurse-patient relationship is very important. They should be able to convey every pain or the physical or emotional need to the nurse without any hesitation. The four major values according to me a nurse should have are the good communication skills, having cordial relationship with patient, respecting diversity and maintaining integrity.

Beliefs

Beliefs of nurses vary from one to another and may affect the quality of care given to the patient. The patients’ and nurses’ belief and insufficient knowledge can hamper the analgesics use for the post-operative pain management (Van Dijk et al., 2017). I believe in alternate medicine. In post-operative pain management, yoga would help the best. It will loosen all the stiff parts of the body and will help in relieving the pain. Yoga helps in eliminating the negative effects caused by the surgery (Sohl et al., 2016). Also in post-operative pain management, I would prefer if the patient has the cultural belief of not using non-vegan medicines and would ask the doctor for alternative vegan diet and medicines. I believe in atheism and equality that every patient irrespective of caste, gender, religion is equal to me. Although there are evidences that say to choose more sustainable approaches that go beyond the nutrition value but I believe in giving vegan diet to the patients because of its high nutritive values. The four beliefs I have as a nurse are the equality, believe in vegan diet, believe in alternate medicine and atheism.

Behaviour

Behaviour is one of the most important factors that decide the nurses as a potential healthcare professional. The patient’s condition and situation understood from their point of view will help in the cultural awareness development and in multicultural environment; it recognizes and values the patient effectively (Reynolds, 2017). I believe that a nurse should first of all be friendly to the patient so that the patient feels comfortable with her providing care. She should have good communication skills and be assertive. Self-discipline is the foremost quality that a nurse must possess. The socially and morally responsible behaviour is the self-discipline that helps in achieving and delivering optimal health care. Increase in good communication skills is proved to reduce the medical errors and have positive impact on the patients (Neese, 2015). Good behavior of a nurse definitely results in better quality of care provided by them. Culturally competent and successful team relationships can be formed using assertive skills. In a study, it was found out that no nurse used the caring behavior for the patients they looked after (Modic et al., 2014).

I as a nurse would have first been friendly with the patient in understanding their condition followed by taking care to my best level. Taking care is a basic behavior quality that a nurse should implement. The therapeutic relationship can be built by culturally sensitive communication (Fischman, 2015). Assertive behaviours help nurses in building culturally competent and effective team relationships. Empathetic behaviour helps the nurses in taking care of the patients and in better health outcomes of the patient. The four behavioral skills that I have are the good communication skills, self-discipline, empathy and assertiveness.

The conclusion drawn is that the personal values, beliefs and behaviour might differ from the professional ones but their understanding together makes a cultural identity of a person. The values, beliefs and behaviour are learnt throughout the life span and we imbibe them with each learning experience. While in a professional environment, especially when it is nursing one is expected to keep their personal values and beliefs aside and work and communicate nicely with all the patients irrespective of their gender, race, caste and religion. These are much intrinsic to the healthcare professionals. The understanding of values, beliefs and behaviour helps in creating a better understanding of the goals and experiences.
