Description of Requirement Engineering

From an early age I have observed that parents, teachers and peers have certain expectations from me. Due to this reason I have always tried to fulfill the expectations as per my capacity without hurting my own expectations and requirements. As mentioned by Dick, Hull & Jackson (2017), in order to create a balance between outer and inner requirements and to meet the challenges in life people are required to implement certain life skill principles such as planning, conducting, implementing tools and so on. For instance, as I am pursuing the course of engineering, there are also some course requirements that are required to be fulfilled so that I can pass the examinations. I have also observed that the lecturers also have different requirements from me which I have to fulfill.


As per my viewpoint, requirement engineering practices are also applicable into the daily life of a person. There are different principles required to follow in the requirements engineering process. This process involves gathering, analyzing, documenting, validating, managing requirements. The waterfall model’s first phase of development is the requirement engineering (Slepcevic-Zach & Stock, 2018). There are also some issues we face in our daily lives that require to be managed to create balance. Here, the requirement engineering can be considered as an important process through which the journey from requirement elicitation to fulfillment of those requirements can be made easy following some requirements engineering steps. As per my understanding, I lacked the knowledge and skills for fulfilling requirements of people surrounding me which pushed me to attempt the tactics that would help me to solve my problems in daily life. It is due to the fact that I have recurrently faced issues for not fulfilling other’s requirements. However, I have noticed that even without gaining knowledge on requirements engineering, I have applied its principles in daily life.

Intentionally, I try to use the principles of requirement engineering after I learned the steps and principles from the course. However, previously I have also have applied the requirements engineering in previous life. As a student I had different responsibilities which had to fulfill together such as planning study course, managing daily life hassles, socializing and others. This elicited my stress response and I have started to observe that I need to manage all the requirements of student life. These times I have allocated a huge time to assimilate or sort every responsibility and associated requirements for starting freshly. I have planned, analyzed, documented, validate and manage response by creating schedule, following the same, setting goals and priorities and so on. I have always tried to understand the reason behind the stress and difficulties I am facing in managing my student life by gathering information using external sources and insight. I have then analyzed how to solve the issues. This helped me to find tools that would help me to solve the problem and helped in manage the same.


In the current course, I have gathered knowledge regarding the required steps to be followed for managing the requirements. Therefore, I could recognize that I have already applied the skills and tactics in my life unintentionally also. This also helped me to implement the rules and strategies of requirements engineering intentionally to fulfill the requirements of the current course which helped me to avoid any stressful situation. However, during the course I have learnt that there are some core principles attached with requirements engineering applying which I could get better results. I have learnt that the first step of the process of requirements engineering is feasibility study (Cimatti, 2016). In simpler term, we need to understand the necessity of the requirement and I consider to fulfill and its domain.

Along with this, I have also learnt that there are certain tasks that are needed to be fulfilled for getting the management solution. Those include inception, elicitation, elaboration, negotiation, specification, validation and management of requirements (Webb & Chaffer, 2016). I have learnt how to implement each step and decided to follow further for engineering the requirements. Apart from that, as per my concern, the requirements that I wish to fulfill in future might be successfully managed if I can follow the tasks and principles associated with it.
