Introduction of Group Decision Making Process

Teamwork plays a crucial role in organisation. There can be diverse teams in the organisations and for every team; there are diverse works that are allocated to the specific teams of the organisation. The same is in the case of the event planning group. The team is responsible for making some suggestions about the event planning. Furthermore, some factors influence the decision-making process. However, the effectiveness and quality of decisions determine how successful a manager will be. Also, brainstorming is an effective factor that helps to generate ideas and alternative solutions. Group decision making has the benefit of drawing from the knowledge and viewpoint of a large number of individuals. In particular, the team is facing issues in making an effective collective decision. The particular aim of this report is to identify the factors that may affect the decisions making process. It will further suggest effective strategies that can help the team to make the final decision. Finally, the conclusion will summarise the overall analysis.

Factors Affecting Group Decision Making

There are several important factors that influence the decision-making process. The major factors include experience, individual dissimilarity, socioeconomic status, and faith in individual relevance. Also, there are some cognitive prejudices that affect the decision-making process (Griffith et al 2008, p.100). Cognitive biases are the thinking pattern based on interpretation and generalizations that may lead to memory blunder, imprecise judgments, and defective logic. In decision making cognitive partiality influences individuals by causing them to over-rely on or lend more credibility to expected annotations and prior knowledge. Although this influence may lead to poor choice sometimes, the cognitive biases allow individuals to make competent decisions with the help of heuristics. Some individual differences may also affect decision making. Evidence specified that age, socioeconomic position, and cognitive ability influence decision making in a group. In addition, elder people are maybe more arrogant regarding their capability to make decisions.

When individuals think about what they choose matter, they are more probable to make a decision. Involving more people in the decision-making process can highly improve the quality of decisions and outcomes (Kolev et al 2015, pp. 67-69).However; it may also increase conflicts and generate another challenge. The present scenario indicates that there are major differences between the ideas of each individual. Furthermore, the case revealed that each team member will push their particular ideas. It is highly necessary to develop effective strategies that may help the organisation to make the final decision in an effective manner. The suitable decisions making strategies the event planning includes:

Decision by Authority

The group makes ideas and holds open consultation, but the ultimate decision is made by a single person. The major advantage of this method includes:

  • Helps in making a decision very quick
  • Does not maximize the strength of the persons in the group
  • The group may not be devoted to executing a decision made by a single person

Judgment by Majority

The group held a vote on the particular matter following a phase of the conversation. The majority succeed.

Decisions by negative minority

The group held a vote for the most disliked idea and eradicate it. They reiterate the procedure until the only single idea is left. The major benefits of this method are:

  • Helpful when there are numerous ideas and few voters

Combining Idea

Instead of dropping a single idea in favor of another, the group looks for the potential of executing both or merge them into a single solution (Cronin et al 2004, pp. 4-9). However, the implementation of this method may take more time as only is one idea is being considered.

The event planning team can make a collective decision with the help of an authoritative person. Furthermore, they can ask the leader or managers to select the most suitable idea among all the alternatives. The authority can select the most appropriate solution which may also help to minimize conflicts and delay in decision making.

Conclusion on Group Decision Making Process

It has been concluded from the report that the team can make a collective decision by implementing effective approaches. Furthermore, the analysis also specified team decisions are influenced by different factors. It is highly essential to identify the factors that affect the decision-making abilities of group members. Group decision making preferably takes advantage of the varied strength and proficiency of its affiliate. By tapping the exclusive merits of group members, it is probable that the group can produce a larger number of options that are of superior quality than individuals. If a better number of higher quality substitute are generated, then it is probable that the group will finally reach a better problem-solving.
