Group decision making is the activity in which a group has to choose on a decision from the alternatives. It is becoming a joint activity in human civilization across the globe. Issues of business are progressive including interactivity that needs combined energy and thorough information pooled by a group of people working together (Dong et al 2015). Teamwork in an organization refers to the work to be completed by a group of people who are collaborating to achieve a common objective of the organization. In the contemporary competitive business environment, working in a team is an indispensable thing that is to be given priority by the organizations to thrive for an extensive period. Teamwork is indeed more effective than a work done by a person as it comprises the mutual energies and aptitude of diverse people. This report discusses the key factors that influence the group's decision making process in the event planning for the celebration of the 5th anniversary.

Factors Affecting the Group Decision-Making Process and Their Influence

Situational Influential Factors

The situational context of the group can affect decision making. The elements of situational context are uncertainty, the extent of liberty, source&firmness of problem, access to information, and more. The extent of liberty means that the group has to create its individual decisions, save its resources, and start its movements. Certain groups have to go through numerous authorization procedures before they can do anything, while others are self-directed, self-sustaining, and autonomous. Besides, groups have to deal with the ambiguity in the decision-making process due to enormous variables that happen with adding more individuals to a situation. The specific member in a group may not be aware of other's thinking and no one can judge each other for their commitment to the group. Therefore, the size of the group is the influential situational factor in the group decision-making process since it leads to ambiguity and confuses the communication. Moreover, the members of a group can make decisions more easily when the other groups have similarly experienced the same issue or problem. Members must also have access to suitable information. Thus, another situational influential factor is the formal and informal network connections of the individuals in the group.

Personal Influential Factors

There are numerous types of decision-makers namely economic, theoretical, aesthetic, political, social, and religious, all are having different ways of making decisions. Economic decision-makers take decisions depending on the usefulness and the practicality. Social decision-makers take decisions by focusing more on the individual impact of the decision and identifies with those who may be impacted by it. The personality is the most influential factor that may affect the environment of the group. The personality of the members in the group can be divided into dominant-submissive; instrumental-emotional, and friendly-unfriendly. The two traits within one pair are opposing to each other. The members who like to be more dominant perform straight and self-reliantly. They have the characteristics of initiating the talk, take control over the decision-making process, and act like an autocratic leader. On the other hand, the submissive personalities are reserved, evade eye contact, and give in to the recommendation of others. In addition to this, some group members are friendly, they manage a good equilibrium between listening and speaking and signifies autonomous decision making. While, the unfriendly members are self-centered, uncaring, displeasing, and do not take an interest in the group decision making process.

Cultural Influential Factors

Cultural factors mean that the members of a group may belong to different cultures and may speak different languages. The factors may include religion, social behavior, values, language, traditions, and more. With the increasing technological advancements and globalization, people from diverse cultures work together in a company. The groups can be heterogeneous where people are different and homogenous where people have similar traits. There can be a situation when the time restraints and the other compressions create the chance for intercultural negotiation and make understanding challenging. There may be a likelihood of conflicts due to diverse cultured people in a group. Moreover, factors like gender stereotypes may affect the individuals play within the group. The group members may have a relaxed time collaborating when they are more analogous than dissimilar in respect of race and age. They take it easy to communicate with each other that further leads to more efficient but less creative resolutions. However, the heterogeneous groups are more effective in terms of quality decisions and the creativeness of the output, despite certain disadvantages (Mishra 2014).

Conclusion on Event Organisation

From the above report on the key factor that influences the group's decision-making process in the business, it can be concluded that there are there major factors namely personal factors, cultural factors, and situational factors. The personal factors include the different traits of the people signifying the personality of individual members like friendliness, emotional status, dominance, and more. Moreover, cultural influential factors include people from speaking different languages and belong to different cultures. Furthermore, the situational factors include aspects like uncertainty, the extent of liberty, source & firmness of problem, access to information, and more.
